Jimmy Fallon and his writers have been on fire for a long time now. The dude continues to take late-night television to another level really, with every week or so usually bringing at least one super-tight, wildly original musical sketch.
Case in point: last night’s ‘The Evolution of Dad Dancing’ starring Fallon and New Jersey governor Chris Christie.
Just in time for Father’s Day, these two absolutely destroy an idea that seems funny on paper but could have gone drastically wrong in the hands of lesser talent.
It’s pretty cool, I think, to witness how Jimmy Fallon has almost single-handedly altered the late night television world. Gone are the days of Johnny Carson just sitting there cracking someone else’s jokes and rarely ever moving from out behind his desk. Fallon reaches hard and pushes a lot of major celebrities to throw caution to the wind and do things with music and dancing and full-scale live productions that late shows of the past would never dared.
It’s hard to know exactly why this has all happened, of course. Maybe it’s a direct result of Fallon’s Saturday Night Live years. Perhaps his house band, The Roots, have helped edge him toward uncharted television waters.
Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the simple fact that every now and then someone comes along who isn’t lazy and willing to take big money just to do a job exactly the same as it’s been done by others for decades, without changing a thing, never straying from the ‘safety zone’ popularized by the big networks.
Whatever it is , it doesn’t even matter, I guess.
What matters is that we have stuff like this to watch, something about fathers on Father’s Day to make us smile and crack up on our couches at the end of a long day or at our computer screens over this morning’s coffee.
Just take a look and you’ll know exactly what I’m saying.
