Disney Princess-Inspired New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are tough for me. Every year starts out with good intentions of a fresh start and I’d like to take advantage, but … where to start?

Sure I want to lose weight, get in shape, get organized, and make more money (Surprise! Just like everyone else!) but there are also more personal goals that I’d like to achieve in the 2014 to achieve better person-hood and satisfaction/success from my not-always-fairytale-like life. So I’m turning to the Disney princesses for a little inspiration and structure.

There’s a reason these girls captivate us with their stories. There are things about all of them that speak to all of us; there are life lessons to be learned and advice to be heeded.

Laugh if you will, but these are tales loaded with archetypical characters and struggles. These stories are layered with the wisdom of the ages. It’s not just about the color of their ball gown or the name of their prince. So as I search my soul and make a plan for a better 2014, one that has a more fairytale ending (we have to wait a year to see), I’m going to take a cue from some beloved characters.

Here are my Disney Princess inspired New Year’s Resolutions!

  • Disney Princess-Inspired New Year’s Resolutions 1 of 13
  • Ariel: Use My Words 2 of 13

It's not always easy to speak up when I want to. I often have a different take on situations, which can make me feel like a fish out of water.  I hesitate before speaking up, for fear of making waves. Or worse, like Ariel, I make a foolish decision and "hand the mic" (metaphor) over to someone who I think is more of an expert and then instantly regret it.

Enough already. Nobody knows my mind better than me. One of my resolutions this year is to trust my own voice and use it to speak up for myself ... confidently!

  • Anna and Elsa: Cherish Sisters 3 of 13

Unlike Anna, I don't have an actual sister. I do have several friends that are pretty close to sister status and I want to find ways to celebrate them this year. I'm resolved to show them how much they mean to me!

  • Aurora: Get More Sleep 4 of 13

Look at the skin on Aurora. She's flawless. Her secret? Beauty rest. I need to get some more of that.

  • Belle: Read More 5 of 13

Like Belle, reading has always been a "favorite part" of my life, so much so that I would say it's defined me. Over the last few years it's a pursuit that I have sorely neglected. I resolve to read more in 2014!

  • Cinderella: Get Out More 6 of 13

When did I become such a stick in the mud? I'm a drudge! I often feel like Cinderella -- work work work! I can't wait around for a fairy godmother and magic mice to save me. I've got to find a way to get myself to the ball, or at dinner and a movie.

  • Jasmine: Trust My Instincts 7 of 13

Jasmine, though a bit naive, has good instincts and is naturally intuitive. She learns fast. I can identify with being a fast learner and having the tendency to jump into situations where I am not adequately prepared. It's a tightrope walk between overconfidence (foolishness) and trusting your gut. But when push comes to shove, as it often does, a good gut instinct is the best foundation you could ask for. Listening to my gut and not letting fear and doubt creep in to color my decisions is on my list of New Year's Resolutions. Thanks, Jasmine!

  • Merida: Practice Focus 8 of 13

Merida has laser focus. She's a bullseye-shooting princess who isn't letting anyone or anything shove her off course. This princess always hits the mark. I would love to have that kind of focus. I'm strong and determined, but also more easily distracted than I'd like to be. My Merida-inspired resolution is to hone my focus this year!

  • Mulan: Don’t Let Others Define Me 9 of 13

Oh, Mulan ... what a great princess she is! She's not letting anyone else define her. It's a struggle that I can relate to personally and professionally. With so many people making suggestions and trying to tell me who/what to be and what to do, I'm often frustrated. My Mulan-inspired resolution  is to break the molds. They never fit me anyways.

  • Pochahontas: Spend More Time Outdoors 10 of 13

Pocahontas is so at one with nature, and it grounds her. I get it. Nothing clears my head more than a walk on the beach or hike in the woods. One of my resolutions for 2014 is to bask in the sun and wiggle my toes in the sand. I want to breathe in fresh mountain air and listen to the wind as it blows through the leaves of tall trees. There's peace and self-knowledge there.

  • Rapunzel: Let My Hair Down More 11 of 13

Every time I take my family to Disneyland, and hop on a roller coaster, my kids' eyes get wide. "Mom! You're FUN!!!" Um... yes. Yes indeed. I am actually a fun person. It can be hard to tell when I am constantly working though. One of my resolutions this year is to let my hair down (I have a lot, but not as much as Rapunzel) and have more fun with my family.

  • Tiana: Don’t Be Too Quick to Judge 12 of 13

This might seem like it's in conflict with my resolution to trust my gut, but it's not. Usually when I am quick to judge a situation, it's reflexive, a snap judgement based on superficial information, or worse, on gossip. In the era of Facebook and Twitter etc., it's easier than ever to hop on a bandwagon before you know all the details. It's not a good thing. I'm resolving to reserve judgment until I have all the facts and/or more time to review situations. You never know when that frog might turn out to actually be a prince, and if you don't possess the ability to suspend disbelief occasionally (like Tiana), you might miss out on something wonderful.

  • Snow White: Delegate More 13 of 13

Bless that Snow White. She really knew how to manage a crew. I often complain that I don't have enough help, but the truth is that I don't always know how to ask for help or how to manage help when it is offered. I am such a DIY gal that I flounder when other's offer to pitch in. That has to change. I'm inspired by Snow White to learn how to delegate. Even Grumpy can lend a hand to me this year!
