17 Great Moments of Movie Fireworks

This year will be the first year I take my son to a live fireworks show. Until now, he has only ever seen movie fireworks. This is both great preparation as well as a possible set up for disappointment. My son knows about the music and the pop and bloom of the pyrotechnics, but he knows the film version of this. Chances are our neighborhood display will not live up to million dollar special effects budgets. (We might be surprised, I’ll fill you in at the end of the week).

Every single Disney Picture we have seen has fireworks in it. This means that what he knows about fireworks is they are the prologue to something magical. I love this.

Most of us associate fireworks with celebrating the 4th of July and America’s Independence Day. However, many of the films in this collection are using fireworks simply to celebrate in a large way. Whether it is to celebrate a harvest in A Bug’s Life, or an Ewok Victory in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, as movie goers we recognize fireworks as a triumphant exhale.

Will you be watching fireworks this week?

  • Beasts of the Southern Wild 2 of 18

Sparklers are my absolute favorite kind of fireworks. There is a magical scene in Beasts of the Southern Wild where Hushpuppy and several other people run around the darkness of the Louisiana tidal basin waving sparklers and firecrackers and they light up the sky. It's one of those moments in film that will make you gasp from the beauty.

  • A Bug’s Life 3 of 18

While not a traditional fireworks display, A Bug's Life captures the essence of a pyrotechnic celebration with their harvester salute.

  • Brokeback Mountain 4 of 18

The scene from Brokeback Mountain where Heath Ledger is silhouetted by a fireworks display is hard to watch because it is so truly beautiful, and we will never have any scenes like this with Heath again. I'm only sharing the fireworks clip from the trailer so as not to spoil any parts of the movie for those who may not have seen it.

  • Coneheads 5 of 18

What makes the fireworks scene from Coneheads so brilliant is you don't actually SEE the bloom of the fireworks after the launch. What you see is the crowd's reaction to what must have been a spectacular and mind-blowing display.

  • Adventureland 6 of 18

We finally get to some good ol' American fireworks in Adventureland. The soundtrack swells with "Don't Dream it's Over" by Crowded House, and the kids at the theme park celebrate the 4th of July and their hormones.

  • Meet Joe Black 7 of 18

I went to the premiere of this movie and spent the entire evening at the after party fanning myself and trying to get up the courage to meet Brad Pitt. Whenever I think about Meet Joe Black, in my mind, I am thinking, "Meet Brad Pitt, Meet Brad Pitt, Meet Brad Pitt..." The final of scene of this film is truly great and it features a stunning, over-the-top fireworks display.

  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 8 of 18

I have always loved the enchanted ceiling at Hogwarts and it is the perfect backdrop to a wild and crazy fireworks distraction scene in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This is a scene your kids will love!

  • Manhattan 9 of 18

The opening scene in Woody Allen's Manhattan, with the montage of iconic areas of New York City, is one of the best love letters to NYC ever. Woody captures the glamour and the grit but saves room for magic and fireworks. And oh the fireworks set to Gershwin will grab you!

  • Mary Poppins 10 of 18

Only the silly Admiral in Mary Poppins would think to bust up the Chimney Sweeping gang with fireworks! In what can only be described as some sort of "get off my lawn" moment (only it's more like, "get off my neighbor's roof"), the Admiral lights up the sky in the middle of  "Step in Time."

  • Star Wars Return of the Jedi 11 of 18

The Ewoks in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi really know how to celebrate.  The rerelease of the film has an even longer celebration with even MORE fireworks, but you can catch a bit of the display from the Ewok party in the 1983 original film release.

  • The Little Mermaid 12 of 18

Hopeless romantics all believe we will see fireworks when we first find our true love. In The Little Mermaid, Ariel actually does see fireworks the first time she lays eyes on Eric.

  • The Natural 13 of 18

The final scene in The Natural is where goosebumps are born. While the plot involves lightning there is no denying the production relied on pyrotechnics to create the effect that is a must see.

  • Tangled 14 of 18

There are so many lovely elements of light in Tangled. The final scenes of the movie build up to a very sweet moment with fireworks, but oh how I love the paper lanterns!

  • Walt Disney Pictures 15 of 18

There is a fireworks scene in every single Walt Disney film. Before the movie starts we are treated to fireworks blasting into bloom around the logo of the film company.

  • The Sandlot 2 16 of 18

The Sandlot 2 was a sweet and simple sequel that was a direct-to-DVD film. It has a very lovely fireworks scene that is incredibly well done and classic feeling. For a direct to DVD film the production quality is impressive for this scene!

  • V for Vendetta 17 of 18

Now it's time for some POWERHOUSE fireworks. V for Vendetta brings what I would call the serious WOW. Really.

  • To Catch a Thief 18 of 18

I adore how nonchalant Hitchcock seems at first with fireworks in To Catch a Thief. Of course everything Hitchcock includes in his films has a purpose and we slowly realize that the fireworks that are erupting outside the window are really what is going on inside the calm and cool Grace Kelly.
