Since the age of 12, I’ve absolutely hated swimsuit shopping.
I don’t think you could blame me, though. Like most of us, I saw daily ads for weight loss products blasted on the TV since before I could even remember. And in between middle school classes, my friends and I thought it was fun to hate on our bodies together in the mirror.
But the thing that made me truly miserable before I even tried a single suit on? Seeing magazines with swimsuit-clad supermodels on the cover — who looked nothing like me. Oftentimes, these women appeared more like dolls than actual humans. Their skin was perfectly smooth and cellulite-free, their bodies were impossibly thin, and there wasn’t a scar or stretch mark in sight. Which made my visits to the dressing room under those harsh fluorescent lights all the more painful.
This year though, it’s a whole different ball game for me, thanks to places like Target.
On March 15, Target debuted their 2018 swimsuit line in a majorly awesome way: From now on, each model you’ll see in its catalog won’t have been airbrushed or digitally reshaped first. Their bodies are lovingly showcased in all their natural glory — just as they were meant to be.
And the whole thing has 12-year-old me breathing a big sigh of relief.
“Building on the strong foundation we set with last year’s campaign, we’re celebrating women and encouraging them to embrace the beauty of their own bodies,” Target shared in their press release.
The store will be offering a whopping 1,700 styles throughout the year, and as of right now, a bunch of their suits go all the way up to a size 26. (Right on!)
As a mom, I was already a huge fan of Target. I mean, how many places can you walk around aimlessly sipping coffee and literally buying almost anything you could imagine? But my favorite part about this store is that after I gave birth, I found a place where I could find stylish clothes that fit my new plus-sized mom-bod. And seeing their new campaign gives me so much hope.
In an ideal world, we’d all be able to easily shop for a bathing suit, no matter how small or large our bodies are. And we’d definitely see models of all shapes and sizes looking fabulous in the newest fashion trends.
Target has definitely taken a step in the right direction with this latest campaign, and I for one am super excited to try on some of these new suits!
