American Girl has always had a special place in my heart. Not only did this company provide me with a special doll to call my own (Samantha fans, I see you), but they gave me and my sisters enchanting books that taught us about history. Through the dolls’ stories, I not only learned to read, but also discovered different decades and lifestyles.
Lucky for us all, American Girl has continued to provide generations of girls (and boys!) with historical stories. The latest in the collection? American Girl’s newest BeForever character Nanea Mitchell. This picturesque doll, which your kids will surely be begging for, comes from Hawaii. Her story, Growing Up with Aloha, explores what life was life for islanders on Oahu leading up to and after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Newbery Honor Award-winning author Kirby Larson does a beautiful job introducing 9-year-old Nanea to the world, explaining how after the attacks, the young girl only wanted to help by doing good deeds and giving selflessly to her community. What better role model could we give to today’s girls?!
Katy Dickson, president of American Girl, commented on the release, saying:
“We hope Nanea’s powerful story of resilience, responsibility to others, and contributing for the common good — or kokua, as it’s known in Hawaii — will resonate with girls and show them they have the power within to face the obstacles that come their way.”
While it’s clear the book itself will be a treat for parents to read alongside their kids, I know that little girls also won’t be able to look past Nanea’s incredible style and accessories. She has vibrant green eyes, silky wavy brown hair, and a 1940s-era Hawaiian-inspired wardrobe.
And don’t even get me started on her hula outfit! It’s a traditional island look that your kids will certainly have on their holiday wish lists. Luckily, the outfits come in kids’ sizes.
Nanea’s collection also has a Family Market set that features over 90 different pieces! This includes a wooden store with a movable counter, food, supplies, displays, and more. My sisters and I would’ve spent hours playing with this set.
However, the release of Nanea isn’t all fun and games. To engage girls in her world and inspirational message, from August 21 through the end of 2017, American Girl will be collecting donations for the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces program to help assist members of the military, veterans, and their families. The brand will also match every dollar donation made on their website or at any American Girl store in the U.S.
Pretty amazing, right? We can teach our kids about historical events and show them the importance of giving back.
American Girl, you’ve simply done it again.
