You can’t escape it, folks. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has gone so viral even President Obama, Justin Timberlake, and Jimmy Fallon have gotten in on the action to raise awareness for ALS. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a “neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.” The only FDA-approved drug to treat the disease can extend a patient’s life expectancy by just a few months. This is why it’s so critical to raise awareness and help support the cause; the more that is done to research the disease, the closer we come to a cure.
Now what’s this ice bucket challenge business? Well, on the off-chance you’ve totally neglected social media for the last week, when you’re nominated to participate, you have 24 hours to either dump ice water over your head or make a donation to the ALS Association – or both! If you accept the challenge, you can pay it forward by nominating others to participate.
The best part? It’s all paying off: according to the ALS Association’s official website, they have raised $4 million dollars between July 29 and August 12, compared to the $1.12 million raised during the same time period last year. And if our Facebook feeds are any indication, this mission shows no signs of slowing down!
So thanks, SheKnows, for the nomination. And now, as we try desperately to dry off … there’s only one thing left to do: The Babble team nominates our friends at Disney Blogs, Hello Giggles, and The Honest Company to participate. You have 24 hours to accept the challenge!
