I don’t care who you are: Getting surprised with tickets to see Justin Timberlake in concert is pretty much the best gift ever. And that’s exactly what one Orlando, Florida grandma received last Sunday when she sat down to check out Easter basket loot, and was shocked by what she found inside.
According to her family, 88-year-old Bette (pronounced “Betty”) Maloney wasn’t always such a huge fan of Mr. JT. But that all changed within the last few years.
“Despite the fact that we are all lifelong *NSYNC and Justin Timberlake fans,” her granddaughter Elizabeth Watson tells Babble, “Nammie didn’t fall in love with him until she saw him in his solo career, through his appearances on Saturday Night Live, Ellen, and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”
(Well, can you blame her?)
Her eventual fandom was kind of written in the stars, though. “Nammie,” as her family calls her, happens to share a birthday with the pop singer — January 31. And it was really solidified after she saw him in concert back in 2013, when she went to see Timberlake perform with her daughter, Beth Watson, and granddaughters Elizabeth and Sarah Watson, for his 20/20 Tour.
Now, she’s such a big fan that she’s even got favorite songs.
“Her favorite JT songs are ‘Mirrors,’ ‘Suit and Tie,’ and ‘Man of the Woods,’ and ‘Young Man’ from the new CD,” Sarah explains. “Although she knows he doesn’t do ‘Young Man’ on this tour because she went online and looked up the set list!”
LOL — Nammie really is JT’s No. 1 Fan.
According to Beth, the idea behind getting Nammie tickets for Timberlake’s upcoming tour was pretty much a no-brainer.
“Initially, we had all decided not to go because we took her to see him on the 20/20 tour,” she tells Babble, “but she really wanted to see Justin Timberlake again and kept mentioning it and doing extensive online research for ticket availability. Finally, Elizabeth and Sarah BOTH called me and said, ‘We HAVE to take Nammie to see Justin or we will regret it for the rest of our lives.'”
How adorable is that?
Obviously, they couldn’t wait to give her the tickets once they finally arrived, but according to Elizabeth, the Watsons weren’t quite prepared for her insanely adorable response.
“We recorded the video of her finding her ticket because we knew she would be super excited,” Elizabeth shares. “We had no idea she would have such a precious reaction. She wasn’t even concerned at all over the cost of the tickets!”
That reaction is now going viral, thanks to Sarah, who shared a video of the adorable moment on Instagram.
“Is this for real?” Nammie can be heard saying in the video. ” … for real, real?”
Yes — it really was for real, real.
The family explains that while Nammie initially said she “didn’t want to go” to the concert when she first heard about it, they grew skeptical with that one, after “she didn’t stop talking about the concert for WEEKS.”
Sarah says the family had debated whether or not to get the tickets for a little while, but that once they saw their grandma’s reaction, it was clear they’d made the right decision. And now that Nammie’s well on her way to becoming a full-on viral sensation, well … they couldn’t be happier.
“It’s been very exciting but the best part of it is that many of Nammie’s former students are seeing it and reaching out to her,” says Sarah. “She has loved hearing from so many of them.”
“It makes us all so glad we can do this for her because she has been there for us our whole lives!” adds her daughter Beth. “She is very close to all of us, and was an extra parent to my girls when they were young … helping with homework and shuttling to dance lessons. As a single parent with a full-time job, I could not have done it without her (and my late Dad’s) help.”
Here’s hoping Nammie has a BLAST when she heads to the concert May 14. And hey, maybe JT himself will welcome her on stage! (Hey, a girl can dream.)
