UPDATE: Well folks, the wait is over! According to Deadline, an official premiere date for the Bug Juice revival, which is reportedly being called Bug Juice: My Adventures at Camp, has been set — and it is so close we can almost taste it. Better set your DVRs for Monday, July 16, when the long-awaited revival returns. (Yes, really, it’s coming that soon.) The 16-part docuseries will air at 7:30/6:30 Central Monday-Thursday throughout the summer on Disney Channel, but you’ll also be able to catch it on the DisneyNow app and Disney Channel VOD, so you can relive your ’90s childhood on basically every platform imaginable.

OMG, are you sitting down right now? Well, I hope you are because we’ve just learned that Bug Juice is returning to the Disney Channel next year — in fact, it’s already in production!

I repeat: BUG JUICE IS RETURNING TO TELEVISION, PEOPLE.

I know, I know — I’m still coming down from this information myself. But in case that news doesn’t have you quite as overcome with emotion as it has me, let me catch you up to speed.

For three glorious seasons beginning in 1998, Bug Juice was like MTV’s Real World for the pre-teen set. You know, those of us who were still just getting our braces taken off and getting dropped off at the mall by our moms. The docuseries chronicled the drama summer adventures of a group of campers ages 12-15, as they embarked on a summer away from home at Camp Waziyatah in Waterford, Maine. (Though later seasons filmed at different camps around the U.S.)

It was overall shorts and Keds. It was campfire songs and awkward first kisses. It was the late-90s in all its plaid-shirted, high-wasted-jeaned glory, and it was everything.

I’ll be honest, most of the plot details are fuzzy to me at this point, tangled up in a whirlwind of my own awkward pre-teen memories. But I will never forget that intense love saga of Connor and Stephanie. Or the color wars. And most of all, I’ll never forget that theme song: Bug juice, it doesn’t come in a jar!/ Bug juice comes from who you are! My best friend and I used to sing it ad nauseum in our 7th-grade Italian class (and wonder why we didn’t have boyfriends).

When the show was suddenly canceled after just three short seasons, it was the biggest news to hit my middle school. (Okay, at least for us.) But now, nearly 20 years later, it’s back — and about to entertain a whole new generation of awkward tweens and teens.

According to a statement released this week by Susette Hsiung, executive vice president of production at Disney Channels Worldwide:

Bug Juice took viewers on a journey of adventure and self-discovery. Now, nearly two decades later, we are thrilled to be back in Maine at Camp Waziyatah with the creative team from Evolution Media and many of the same crew members who produced the original series.”

While there aren’t a whole lot of details out there yet, Cosmo reports that just like the original series, the revival will mainly center around a cabin of guys from “The Grove” and a cabin of girls from “The Hill.” And I’m willing to bet money that the drama among this Instagram-generation will be a whole lot juicier. ( … Pun intended?)
