Prom season is upon us once again, as teens everywhere are picking up dresses and rented tuxedos, looking for flowers and making after-prom plans, and getting excited for one of the biggest nights of their young lives. It is also the season of over-the-top “promposals,” a fairly new phenomenon thanks to the Internet, in which kids ask each other to prom, often in some outlandish manor. (Usually, in hopes of snagging some online fame.)
But not all kids are out for the glory of the limelight — sometimes the Internet just stumbles upon incredibly sweet and authentic promposals that take on a viral life of their own.
Such was the case last month, when the story of Newton, Kansas high school freshman Carlie Wittman went viral, after she was the recipient of the Internet’s cutest promposal ever. In a now viral video, Shaedon Wedel (who happens to be Carlie’s brother’s best friend) asked the teen to the prom using none other than Doritos as his inspiration.
And I gotta say, it was pretty epic.
Believe it or not, this past weekend was finally prom time for Carlie and Shaedon — and it turned out to be even more epic than the promposal was, if you can believe it.
According to KWCH 12, Doritos heard about the story and thought it was pretty amazing, too. In fact, the brand thought it would be cute to surprise the couple on prom night, and even tweeted a teaser photo as to what Carlie could possibly expect: an image of a red carpet leading up to a helicopter.
Hmm … what could they have been planning?
It turns out, the good folks at Doritos were so moved by the sweetness of Shaedon Wedel that they decided to up the ante by providing a once in a lifetime, amazing experience — they provided not just one, but two helicopters to bring the friends to the prom in style.
I repeat: A HELICOPTER RIDE TO PROM! How cool is that?! (One was for Carlie and Shaedon, while the other was for Carlie’s brother and his date — how adorable!)
Wearing a gorgeous sea foam green dress with plenty of sparkles (and a scepter fit for royalty), Carlie looked every bit the part of a beautiful princess on prom night. And when Shaedon arrived to pick her up, he presented her with a lovely corsage to match. (We’re talking fairy tale stuff here, people.)
As Shaedon told KWCH12 on Saturday:
“This is absolutely amazing, this is so cool, such a cool experience. Especially to do it with her though: to be able to have her this happy, it’s all I wanted.”
Everyone needs a friend as thoughtful as Shaedon is to Carlie — and it’s clear he cares for her deeply.
“I didn’t do it for the publicity and stuff, I did it to make her happy,” he told reporters last month, shortly after going viral. “She deserves a lot.”
