When my husband and I got married many moons ago, he slipped a wooden ring on my finger that he had made himself. It was stunningly beautiful and incredibly delicate (it later broke, which broke my heart). For years, that ring has been stored in pieces in a small box in my underwear drawer. I love that my husband spent hours whittling the perfect ring meant just for me. In many ways, it truly symbolized our love.
Ed Sheeran knows what I’m talking about. He recently turned heads at the Brit Awards when he was spotted on the red carpet wearing a ring that was handmade by his bride-to-be (how cool is she?!)
“It’s an engagement ring,” Sheeran told British talk show Lorraine. “I feel like it’s good to both do things.”
He was referring, of course, to both him and his lovely fiancée, Cherry Seaborn, whom Sheeran has known since childhood, wearing rings to symbolize their commitment.
“I never saw why men didn’t wear engagement rings. It’s the same commitment either way,” he continued.
He’s totally right.
According to the American Gem Society, the tradition of women wearing engagement rings dates all the back to Roman times.
“Anthropologists believe this tradition originated from a Roman custom in which wives wore rings attached to small keys, indicating their husbands’ ownership. In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned the very first diamond engagement ring on record for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy.”
Many people have commented on how odd they find it that neither my husband or I wear rings at all — another tradition buster. Neither of us like the look of diamonds or gold, and we couldn’t really agree on what style to get that we would be cool with wearing forever and ever until death do us part. We considered tattoos, but that wasn’t “us” either. So we broke with tradition, saved a few bucks, and went without rings.
Sheeran, a softy feminist-type modern dude, is flipping the tradition of gender roles when it comes to wedding preparations. Personally, I love the idea that a man would wear an engagement ring. Not only is it sweet, but it shows just in love and excited Sheeran is about his future marriage. And he’s not only wearing an engagement ring, but it is handmade by Seaborn, who used silver clay to craft it.
The adorable couple broke the news of their engagement back in 2015 when Sheeran posted a picture of the two lovebirds on his Instagram account.
“Got myself a fiancé just before new year,” the caption read under the photo of the young couple laughing and smooching. “We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx.”
I can’t wait to see how the couple plans out their wedding. I’m sure they’ll get creative with some of the traditions involved with the big day!More On
