This morning Barbara Walters announced on a live episode of The View that Elisabeth Hasselbeck is leaving the show to begin a new gig at the Fox Network. Barbara stumbled through the announcement, saying she was verklempt like Streisand, and then said, “I’m happy that you are going…” Then realizing how that must have sounded, immediately corrected with,”No! I am NOT happy that you are going!”
She turned the rest of the announcement over to Elisabeth, who confirmed she will be joining the Fox & Friends team in September and thanked Fox for the opportunity. Elisabeth then revealed that there would be no lingering goodbye. Today would be her last day on The View.
I have watched The View through many different eras of its broadcasting identity. Seeing intelligent women from different walks of life discuss “hot topics” every morning has been interesting and entertaining to me. I have also been fascinated by Elisabeth’s sharp rise in career. I still remember her as a contestant from one of the first seasons of Survivor. The more confident she grew, the more outspoken she became — and people tuned in to see the conflict. I cringe thinking about the season of the battle between Elisabeth and Rosie O’Donnell that created a massive implosion on the show.
The View gave the morning to Elisabeth to thank the staff and crew and to address each of her cast members.
Elisabeth to Whoopi: “There is no doubt that you are one of the most talented artists on the planet, but you are even more loving than you are talented.”
Elisabeth on Joy: “Joy and I have spent the past ten years sparring over politics, but you know I have insane amounts of respect for you. I completely honor all of the conversations we have had.”
Elisabeth on Sherri Shepherd: (who was not at the taping) “Your protest of absence is not working. I am still going to Fox & Friends.” (She continued to gush lots of love directly to Sherri.)
Elisabeth to Barbara: “I think it is fair to say that I have attended the Barbara Walters School of Broadcast Journalism, and I feel as if I have my Masters in Communications from being next to you.”
