Editor’s Note: Babble is a part of the Walt Disney Company.
When 12-year-old Janielle and 10-year-old Elijah recently headed off for a day at the Walt Disney World Resort, they never expected just how much magic they’d experience. But boy, were they in for a surprise.
The siblings, who have both lived with Courtney and Tom Gilmour for the last three years, were thrilled to go on a family getaway to both the Star Wars Convention and Disney’s Magic Kingdom. (And who wouldn’t be?!) Not only was it their first-ever trip to Walt Disney World Resort, but they were also celebrating some extra-special news: They would soon be adopted into the Gilmour family.
Courtney tells Babble that the kids have always been huge Disney fans, so celebrating their upcoming adoption in “The Happiest Place on Earth” seemed perfect. “No matter what was going on in their lives they always had happy Disney related memories,” she shares.
But little did they know, Courtney and Tom had a special surprise planned for them during their visit with Mickey Mouse — a reveal of their official adoption date.
Needless to say, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
The heartwarming moment was caught on camera by Courtney, who shared the video on Facebook July 6 where it’s since gone viral. In it, the kids can be seen happily getting their autographs signed and photos taken with Mickey, right before a Parks photographer kindly interrupts. “Our friend Mickey has something very special to share with you guys,” he says, before an official “Adoption Day” sign is revealed to Janielle and Elijah.
The kids immediately burst into tears (as will you) and the family envelops one another in hugs. (You can’t get Disney magic like this any where else, people!)
“The more I thought about it, the more I thought, ‘How cool would it be for Mickey to help up a sign telling the kids?'” Courtney tells Babble. “We booked a FastPass to meet him and thought we would just slip him the sign.”
She also posted a photo of the family’s celebration pins on Twitter, which caught the eye of the Walt Disney World social media team. Disney employees soon stepped in to help the Gilmours really make the most of their reveal, by booking them a special meet-and-greet with The Mouse himself. And as you can see, the plan was executed flawlessly!
“My favorite part was hearing the kids start to read the sign and seeing the pure excitement,” Courtney notes. “I can never ever redo that feeling.” As for Janielle and Elijah? “The kids were floating afterwards and just so excited!” Courtney says. “They immediately started counting down the days to the adoption.”
Be still, my heart.
