Few classic children’s tales have managed to capture the hearts and minds of
kids parents everywhere more than Adam Mansbach’s aptly named and hilariously on-point picture book, Go the F*ck to Sleep. When it was first released back in 2011, it practically caused the entire Internet to erupt in a standing ovation, for sweetly telling kids of the world exactly what we’ve always wanted to tell them: JUST. F*CKING. SLEEP, ALREADY.
In the years since, it’s been famously read aloud by everyone from Samuel L. Jackson (who brilliantly voices the audiobook) to LeVar Burton, of Reading Rainbow fame. And now, thanks to a newly released clip by Vanity Fair, we have one more famous reader to add to that list: Jennifer Garner.
In the nearly two-minute-long clip, Garner lies on a chaise lounge chair alongside a gorgeous in-ground pool, and flips casually from page to page as she reads.
The windows are dark in the town, child, the whales huddle down in the deep.
I’ll read you one very last book if you swear … you’ll go the f*ck to sleep.
Her words roll off the tongue at first like gentle whispers, all in that trademark breathy voice of hers; until they become louder and louder, peppered with more and more F-bombs as her frustration mounts.
For the record, Garner is really, really good at dropping a well-placed F-bomb. But honestly, the whole thing is just super enjoyable from start to finish. One, because she’s Jennifer Garner; and two, because I mean, when is this book ever not hilarious?
The release of the clip comes alongside Garner’s turn as Vanity Fair‘s March cover girl — where she opens up for the first time in a pretty candid interview about her marriage and divorce from Ben Affleck.
“It was a real marriage,” Garner told the mag. “It wasn’t for the cameras. And it was a huge priority for me to stay in it. And that did not work.” (For more on that, you can read the full cover story right here.)
For now, though, catch Garner’s retelling of Go the F*ck to Sleep above, and prepare to rock with laughter.
