Godparents Celebrate Prince George’s Christening

Being chosen as a godparent is an honor and a privilege, and England’s Prince George got a lucky seven.

Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge chose close friends and mentors to stand with their son at his christening today at St. James Palace in London.

The newly christened Prince George Alexander Louis’s godparents are: William’s cousin Zara Phillips Tindall; close friend of Princess Diana and philanthropist Julia Samuel; royal family friend William Van Cutsem; college friend Oliver Baker; classmate and friend Emilia Jardine-Paterson; the son of William’s godmother, the Duchess of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor; and William and Harry’s former personal secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton.

Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton, Prince George’s aunt and uncle, are not official godparents, but will undoubtedly have strong roles in his life as the only sibling of each of his parents.

The ceremony took place in the Chapel Royal at St. James’ Palace, the room where Princess Diana’s body lay for five days before her funeral in 1997. The christening celebration was small, with only 22 guests, including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Guests returned to Clarence House after the ceremony for a tea, featuring a christening cake with a tier taken from Prince William and Kate’s wedding cake. Prince George’s christening gown was a replica of an outfit made in 1841 for Queen Victoria’s daughter.

The Duke of Cambridge’s cousin, Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Phillips Tindall, is the only member of the royal family among Prince George’s godparents.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said that Prince George’s parents and godparents only have one job, and that’s to teach him about the existence of Jesus. The Church of England’s guidance is that godparents are there to help kids with the “bigger questions in life,” such as faith and love. As a godmother myself, I took that responsibility seriously. Kids look to the adults in their lives as role models for various reasons and at different times. Prince George has no idea of the tasks that lie ahead of him, including the possibility of being the king of a country. His parents seem to take their roles as public figures in stride, something his father most definitely learned while growing up in the public eye. His education, military service, and social life were scrutinized, and he endured the break up of his parents’ marriage and his mother’s death with no break. He seems to know a thing or two about surrounding himself with loyal friends and a spouse who is a partner in his life and work. The choice of godparents for his son reflects this approach.

Prince George may not know what’s waiting for him down the road, but it looks like he’s starting out strong with seven people officially designated as important figures in his life, and that’s something to celebrate for any baby. Also? Like any little guy on his christening day, he did his one important job: looking impossibly cute…
