In case you didn’t already get the memo, James Corden is kind of the best. And on last night’s episode of The Late Late Show, he proved that fact yet again.
Corden became a dad for the third time earlier this week when his wife Julia went into labor somewhat unexpectedly. In fact, her labor was so unexpected, his show producers had to scramble to find a last-minute host to fill in before going on air.
Returning to his show Thursday night, Corden explained how it all went down.
“We went in for a routine check-up on Tuesday, and suddenly the doctors turned to us and said, ‘Oh no, this is probably happening today. And this baby could arrive in the next few hours,’” he recalled, “which was a complete shock, we were unprepared.”
Aside from the fact that they weren’t expecting their baby to arrive for a few more weeks, there was also the small matter of, you know, having to tape a live show in a few hours.
“It’s a really terrible thing if you’re in a room and your wife is 8½ months pregnant,” he continued, “and the doctor is talking to her about really serious things about giving birth, and there’s really no easy way to bring up the fact that you have to tape a show that day. Take my word, you can’t say that without sounding like a d*ck.”
LOL — nope, you certainly can’t.
Luckily, Corden says he did what he always does in a time of crisis — he called Harry Styles. (Duh.) The former One Direction singer was apparently free that day, and more than game to fill in for the late-night host, so it all worked out.
Meanwhile, though, Corden says he was in a hospital room sweating profusely and wracked with nerves. Once his little girl arrived, he and his wife were overcome with tears and emotion. So much so, that when the doctor turned to him and asked for a name, he blanked. The truth is, they hadn’t yet settled on one. Thinking they had a few more weeks until their little girl arrived, they were still batting around options.
And that’s when the proud new father blurted out the first name that came to him: Beyoncé.
“I don’t know why I said it,” he admitted in last night’s taping. But once he had, he noticed a nurse nearby, ready to jot down the name on a form.
“Excuse me, there is only one Beyoncé,” he told her, before she could put pen to paper.
Fatherhood isn’t exactly new to Corden, who’s already a dad to Max, 6, and Carey, 3; and he’s often shared that it’s hardest gig yet. Back in 2013, when he first started hosting The Late Late Show following Craig Ferguson’s departure, he told People that he was “nervous and excited” to be taking over, but that nothing compares to the fear of fatherhood.
“What’s more scary? Being a father. No question,” he shared. “It’s just a TV show. It all pales in significance.”
By all accounts, he’s a pretty hands-on dad, too; and has done his fair share of diaper changes.
“[It’s] mostly whoever is nearest,” Corden told People. “Me and my wife do rock, paper, scissors for who gets up in the night. That happens all the time.”
Looks like he’s in for a LOT more games of rock, paper, scissors in 2018!
