A Customs Agent Apparently Didn’t Believe John Krasinski Could Be Married to Emily Blunt

For the record, John Krasinski doesn’t need to be reminded that he “married up”, mmmkay? And he reiterated that fact on The Tonight Show Tuesday, while sharing the hilarious story of a recent trip through a London airport, when a skeptical customs agent simply couldn’t believe Krasinski was married to Emily Blunt. And let’s just say, it has left the Internet cry-laughing all day.

“It was going great, the customs, the whole experience,” Krasinski told host Jimmy Fallon. “And then I hit this guy who was about my age. He looked like he was ready to get a little surly with me.”

The actor, who has been married to Blunt for eight years and shares two daughters, Hazel and Violet, with the British actress, explained that the customs agent was first totally unimpressed by his body of work.

“He said, ‘It says here that you’re an actor. Would I know you from anything?’ And I went, ‘You know, we redid the U.K. version of The Office,’” he shared. “Strike one! He was like, ‘Oh, you took what we did, perfect.’”

But just wait, it gets better.

“And then he says, ‘Who are you visiting here?’” Krasinski relayed. “And I was like, ‘My wife,’ He says, ‘Oh, is she an actress? Would I know her?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know man, her name’s Emily Blunt.’ And he goes like this, ‘You? You married Emily Blunt? Go. Just go.’”

LOL! Can you imagine?!

“I married up, and don’t I know it,” joked Krasinski to the crowd. “They don’t have to tell me; the customs agent in London did.”

Considering Hollywood marriages seem to end about as fast as they begin (and the divorce rate for us regular folk ain’t looking too good, either), it is quite a feat to see a talented and successful couple like Krasinski and Blunt going strong after nearly a decade — and look pretty happy while they’re at it. Especially when each month seems to bring news of another sad breakup. (Don’t even get me started on Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan.)

In a recent interview with Brides magazine, Krasinski shared that the secret to their marriage is that they literally avoid talking about their fame. For them, being together and being just two regular people is the most important thing. Krasinski also told Brides that when they were first dating, he tried to explain to her how much he respects her work. But she totally shut that talk down — fast.

According to Krasinski, the moment went down a little something like this:

“‘So I just want to have this really honest conversation. I think you’re one of the best act—’ I didn’t even get out ‘actress.’ She went, ‘No, no, no, no!’ very loud. We didn’t have that conversation again for a really long time, and it saved our relationship.”

The couple did eventually go on to talk work — most recently, the pair even worked together on Krasinski’s directorial debut, A Quiet Place, which hits theaters April 6. But Blunt was actually working on the set of her upcoming Disney film, Mary Poppins Returns, when her husband ran into the surly customs agent. The live-action musical — WHICH I HONESTLY CANNOT WAIT TO GO SEE — is set to be released on Christmas Day, 2018, and picks up 25 years after the original story left off. Though the Banks children are now all grown up, Mary Poppins returns — magic carpet bag and all — when tragedy suddenly strikes Michael Banks.

Let’s just hope that a movie usher doesn’t stop Krasinski from getting a front row seat, amiright?
