With Mother’s Day coming up, I have my heart set on some pretty simple things to make me feel more like a lady and less like a diaper-changing, laundry-doing, house-cleaning, work machine who also happens to nurse 24/7. I’ve got my wish list ready with things like luxe bath bombs and maybe even a professional massage.
Kelly Clarkson probably had a similarly modest idea for what a break from motherhood might look like when she celebrated her birthday on April 24 — but we’ll never know, because her BFF’s planned something far more amazing than a fizzy bubble bath.
“Woke up this morning to a birthday scavenger hunt that ended with an anagram!!” wrote Clarkson over the weekend. “Best surprise ever! #morninghair #whereisthegirlstrip #sweaty”
In the now-viral video, which has been viewed over 1.1 million times (wow!), the Grammy-winning singer is seen looking like … well, a typical mom, as she pieces together Scrabble tiles to form a message at the end of what had to be a truly fun scavenger hunt. When she realizes what the message means — that her friends are taking her on a girl’s trip and that she better “pack her bags,” she immediately freaks out in the most adorable way.
I swear, as a mom of three, I can totally sense Clarkson’s desperation to get out of the house, wear real clothes, have her hair done, and eat food that isn’t orange or come with cartoons on its packaging. Her expression says what every exhausted mom everywhere is feeling: “GET ME THE HECK OUT OF HERE!”
Motherhood is a wild ride; there’s just no way to sugar coat it. Whether you’re a working mom or a stay-at-home-mom, the pressure to get everything done — and done well — is always set on high alert, and it never feels like there’s enough time in the day to get even the most basic stuff done. (Why hello there, overflowing pile of dirty laundry on my couch … )
We like to think that as celebrities, women like Kelly Clarkson probably have it super easy in comparison to the rest of us — and while I’m sure paying the bills might not register quite the same way on their stress radar, I’m willing to bet my very last cent that Clarkson has all the same worries that the rest of us do. I mean, did you not see her messy bun and stained t-shirt? Girl looks like she’s in the middle of the motherhood trenches, y’all.
Here’s hoping that her upcoming girl’s trip is an absolute blast, and that she’s able to let loose (and relax a little). I know I would! And also? Kudos to her amazing group of friends for thinking to put something like that together. Every mama needs a tribe of fierce and fabulous lady friends to help them get through the hardest job on the face of the earth. Nice job, ladies!
