We’re big movie buffs at home. When we’re not watching flicks, we’re quoting them. (I’d even go so far as to say much of our daily communication depends on them.)

When we’re not quoting Elf, Enchanted, or Zoolander, we’re borrowing lines from Finding Nemo, The Sandlot, and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. Why? Because these scripted sayings are more clever, fitting, or hilarious than anything we might dream up on our own. But more than that, quoting movies — particularly obscure ones — feels strangely special to my family, like we’re in on some massive inside joke. And why not? A good movie line can diffuse an awkward situation, put a smile on a face, or lighten a heavy mood.

As film fanatical as my family might be, not every movie quote is well-received. Just the other day I said to my 8-year-old, “You know what they say: ‘If you build it …'” to which he replied, “… then it’s built.”

The whompity-whomp of that Field of Dreams punchline got me wondering about the other mega-famous movie lines that have yet to be discovered by our kids. So I did what I do — I asked them! Take a look at 15 legendary movie quotes completed by kids:
