Hurricane Irma may have packed a series of nasty punches, but she hasn’t stopped the marvelous folks in Florida from rising up and banding together to come to each other’s aid. Anyone looking for proof that the human spirit is tough as nails — and hella inspiring — need not look any further than Twitter, where incredible and heartwarming stories have been circulating for days. And one famous Twitter user in particular has been spreading some of the best ones.
Everyone’s favorite human, Kristen Bell, has been riding out the storm at Walt Disney World’s Swan and Dolphin Resort for the last few days, where she’s been live-tweeting and Instagramming updates that are nothing short of heartwarming.
“Every person I passed today was assisting someone else,” Bell wrote in an Instagram caption over the weekend. “It was beautiful to see. Sad that a hurricane has to bring out the best in everyone — but happy that the community will be holding hands through this. I’m grateful to Gary and the team at @swandolphin in Epcot for helping us feel safe while we get through this together.”
Bell even helped out the family of her friend and fellow Frozen star Josh Gad, by snagging them a room in the same Orlando hotel where she was hunkered down.
In an Instagram post Gad shared over the weekend, he wrote:
“So @kristenanniebell literally saved my parents and my entire family tonight from #hurricaneirma. When they were stranded in Florida, she got them a hotel room at her hotel in Orlando and saved them, my brothers, my sister-in-law and niece and nephew. They don’t make them like this girl. Thank you Kristin. You are truly an angel sent from above. And thank you @ewablueeyes for bother her when I asked you not to!!!!”
According to her Twitter and Instagram updates, the actress spent her weekend keeping evacuees entertained and calm while Hurricane Irma pounded the state with historic rainfall and wind not seen in over 100 years. Bell even sang her heart out for kids and families sheltering at a local school, delighting and calming frazzled nerves.
“I hope maybe some of these songs are running through your head the rest of the day and will take your mind off [Irma],” Bell could be heard saying in one video uploaded to social media.
But even cooler than that? The actress partook in some pretty competitive midnight wheel chair races in the hotel hallway. Bell shared a glimpse hilarious and uplifting video to her Instagram with the caption, “LEMONADE BABY … and midnight wheelchair races,” she wrote. “Here is dimly lit footage of my narrow miss to the more talented.”
At one point, Bell even made her famous husband Dax Shephard wildly jealous when she posted a video herself being serenaded by a lovely elderly evacuee named John, who crooned the words to “You Are My Sunshine” as Bell sang along.
“This is John,” Bell wrote to Shephard in the now-viral video. “He’s my side piece here in Orlando. I hope you understand. I’m powerless over a man who serenades me.”
But don’t feel too bad for Dax — he gave Bell his blessing when he responded on Instagram by saying, “I fully approve of this side action. Git it gurl.”
(Um what? These two are so sweet.)
Kristen Bell has made us all fall in love with her a million times over before — from her hilarious roles in movies like Bad Moms to her honest parenting hacks to that time she cried over meeting a sloth (who could forget?!).
But if you ask me, it’s her kindness and compassion that stand out most. The world needs more good humans like Kristen Bell, who clearly took a stressful and scary situation and made it hopeful for so many others who were in it with her. Now that’s amazing.
