There’s a reason our fave celebrity moms are, well, our faves. It’s because we can relate to them. We imagine they are our besties, and someday, we will have our lattes together, chatting over how silly our kids are or how our husbands can never seem to find the hamper. And then we will be invited to fancy Hollywood parties and premieres. (Or maybe that’s just my fantasy.) Anyway, hands-down, a celeb mom at the top of everyone’s list is Kristen Bell — for her humor, honesty, and consistently REAL take on what motherhood is truly like.
Recently, while at the Pandas premiere in Los Angeles, Babble got a chance to catch up with Bell on the red carpet, where we asked her if she’s ever done anything crazy to get her kids to sleep. And, per usual, our gal delivered. BIG time.
“Yeah, I’ll get controversial,” Bell began. (Which is why we luuuuuurve her). The mother of Lincoln, 4, and Delta, 3, went on to admit that she’d recently resorted to some extreme measures in the quest to get more shut-eye.
“My 3-year-old decided to stop sleeping about nine months ago,” shared Bell, who then described how her daughter turned lights on, banged toys against the wall, and even moved furniture in order to protest bedtime.
Hmmm. Sounds familiar. I, too, have had sleep deniers and light turner-on-ers and wall-bangers in my house. And it’s all been so fun and NOT AT ALL FRUSTRATING. Really, it’s the best part of parenthood, I swear …
Anyway, so what did Bell and husband Dax Shepard do about the situation?
“We switched the doorknob,” Bell replied. “We turned the lock on the outside.”
“I’m sorry, I know that’s controversial,” Bell added before going on to say that she and Shepard tell their daughter, “We love you and will see you in the morning, but now it’s time to sleep.” She also said she usually calms down in about 10 minutes and that they of course unlock the door once she’s asleep.
I can relate to this story on the most personal level. I spent months — MONTHS — standing outside my son’s door at bedtime, holding it closed while he pulled on the doorknob on the other side. I was beyond frustrated and desperate for him to go to bed after battling all day long about having to wear shoes and why we don’t write on the walls.
So controversial or not, I am not judging you, Kristen. AKA Bestie. BFF. Soul sister …
Okay, fine. So Kristen Bell doesn’t know me from Adam, but I love how she tells it like it is when it comes to motherhood. She’s shared plenty of real talk over the years, as well as some pretty cool parenting hacks — like “hands on the circle”, her method to keeping her young kids safe when in parking lots or on busy streets. She’s also an advocate for women to breastfeed wherever and whenever they need to, and has sounded off on the matter in more than one interview.
And, if you love Kristen Bell humor and parenting talks as much as I do, you have to catch her Momsplaining video series, which is laugh-out-loud-spit-your-wine funny.
Keep telling the truth about #momlife, KB, and we will keep laughing at your jokes and imagining that some day we will fly out of our midwest suburbs and track you down on the streets of LA. so we can have coffee together. (Oops, that was probably just me again.)
