By now, we’re all familiar with the Elf on the Shelf phenomenon. (Or make that, a little too familiar.) Love it or hate it, everyone’s got an opinion about the annual holiday tradition — including Jimmy Kimmel.
“The Elf on the Shelf is tearing our family apart,” Kimmel recently told the audience at Jimmy Kimmel Live. “We forget to move it every night … We convinced our daughter that the elf is spying on her reporting back to Santa. It’s a destructive force in the home.”
I know a ton of parents out there who couldn’t agree more, and are currently counting down the days until Christmas just to be rid of the nightly burden that little guy brings. Which is also why parents everywhere are rolling with laughter this week over Kimmel’s recent segment about a little-known alternative to the Elf on the Shelf.
They call him: “Lannister on the Bannister.”
Yes, GOT fans — as in that Lannister.
In the skit, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau appears as his well-known Game of Thrones character Jaime Lannister (swoon) to serve up some major holiday realness to kids everywhere. He’s essentially the no BS version of Elf on the Shelf we’d all actually like to have in our home, wielding a tiny sword of discipline (don’t worry, it’s fake) and dishing up some no-nonsense rules and regulations.
“I once knew a man who broke his promise, soon after a man and his family were invited to a wedding,” he tells the kids. “And at the wedding hall all the doors were locked so no one could escape … so give your sister back her Hatchimal.”
Any GOT fan worth their salt will definitely recognize the scene he’s referring to (ahem Red Wedding), and will appreciate so many of the little GOT references — right down to the moment Coster-Waldau pops up in elf garb to say “a Lannister always pays his installments.”
Now, where can we pick up one of these angry little Lannisters to scare our own kids … ?
