Live Blogging the 71st Golden Globe Awards

71st Golden Globe Awards : The Live Blog

Refresh often during the show tonight.

The 71st Golden Globe awards will be broadcast live tonight on NBC at 8pm Eastern and 5pm Pacific. Let’s watch together! I’ll be live-blogging the awards this evening right here at this very URL. I’ll see you later tonight just before the ceremony begins.

What I’m Wearing:

I’m already decked in my Golden Globe garb of comfy blue jeans, a turquoise t-shirt, and a black cardigan. My hair is swept up and piled high on my head, my feet are bare and my toenails are turquoise.

Feel free to let me know what you are planning to wear to tonight’s ceremony.

The Timeline

(all timelines are in Eastern time zones)
5:50pm Watching the countdown to the red carpet on E!

6:02pm Zooey Deschanel is the first to talk to Ryan Seacret on E!

6:11pm Kevin Spacey admits in a Ryan Seacrest interview that he wrote a letter to Woody Allen and gifted him a Netflix subscription. He says Woody wrote him back saying, “Thanks for the Netflix!”

6:18pm Did you know that the Golden Globes just opened up an Instagram account? They did! The photos coming in this evening are pretty awesome.

6:24pm shhhhhh! Liev is on the TV! {swoon}

6:28pm While we are having a little fashion moment I thought I would share my favorite look on the red carpet so far. Lupita Nyongo from 12 Years a Slave is just stunning in Ralph Lauren!

6:34pm: Just caught a glimpse of Amy Adams on the red carpet and WOW! That is a plunging neckline!

6:47pmGolden Globe co-hosts Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler arrive on the red carpet.

7:00pm Clicked over to NBC for the official Golden Globe Arrival Special hosted by a sunglass wearing Matt Lauer, a stunning red gown wearing Savannah Guthrie, a scruffy Carson Daly, and a beautiful white and black lace gown wearing Tamron Hall.

7:05pm: Matt and Savannah interview Michael Douglas and talk to him about Woody Allen. Michael thinks it is a real gesture of the Golden Globes to present the award to Woody. By the way Woody will not be accepting his award in person. You can read more about that in this great piece in the Los Angeles Times: Golden Globes to honor Woody Allen, whether he wants it or not

7:10pm Sandra Bullock rocks a side pony and a plunging deep pink and black gown as she talks to Matt and Savannah. She then awkwardly stands there as Matt and Savannah chatter into a commercial break. YOU GUYS! Let Sandra GO! She has stuff to do!

7:17pm We learn a fact from Jennifer Lawrence: when she has time off you can find her on the couch watching a minimum of 4 hours of TV a day. That’s our kind of girl!

7:22pm Julianna Margulies is told this is her 11th nomination for a Golden Globe by Tamron. Julianna says, “oh really?” Tamron says, “YES IT IS.” And this it is a wee bit awkward.

7:23pm Kevin Bacon is adorable with his daughter Sosie, who will be this year’s Miss Golden Globes.

7:29pm Tamron is now interviewing Robert Redford and Emma Thompson. She asks Robert, “this is only your 2nd time at these awards. Why?” He says, “you’d have to ask them.” OH SNAP. And once again…awkward.

7:34pm Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone discuss how they are looking forward to running around and having fun during the show. Melissa says Amy and Tina are “going to kill it.”

7:37pm: Julia Roberts on the red carpet in a white oxford shirt sort of thing under a strapless black gown kind of number from Dolce & Gabbana

7:43pm Matt Damon is suffering from a mountain biking injury so do not shake his hand! Tonight is his 5th Golden Globe nomination. He has never won an award from the HFPA. (yet)

7:50pm TEN MORE MINUTES!! Go put on comfy pants, get a beverage, and get ready!

8:00pm Already wearing different dresses from the red carpet, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler welcome all of the stars in the room and all of the women and gay men watching at home.

8:03pm {swiftly paraphrasing} Tina and Amy explain that THIS YEAR all of the big stars are in the audience. Super stars. It is such a star filled audience that Matt Damon is pretty much a garbage man level star there. They zing Julia Louis-Dreyfus for not sitting in the TV section. Another brilliant zing is directed towards George Clooney. Gravity is a film about George Clooney as a man who would rather float into space and die than spend one minute on earth with a woman his own age. Matthew McConaughey lost 45 pounds for a part this year, or what actresses call, being in a movie.

8:10 Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks present best supporting acrtress in a motion picture.
Jennifer Lawrence wins for American Hustle
“I actually did watch all of the movies, not all of them, but you know what I mean, so I can say that winning this year, it’s an honor, don’t ever do this again!”

8:14pm: Jacqueline Bisset wins best supporting actress in a TV series for her performance in TV Dancing on the Edge.
She is overcome with emotions as she accepts her award. The censors don’t quite catch her remarks as she begins quoting words of inspiration from her mother. We land on the S-word and then she says, “Go to hell and don’t come back.” It’s clear this is a message to people who told her she would never achieve success.

8:22pmMark Ruffalo and Naomi Watts present for Best TV Movie or Mini Series
Behind the Candelabra wins the award.

8:25pm Elisabeth Moss wins Best Actress in a Mini Series or TV Movie for her performance in Top of the Lake.
And she wakes up the censors immediately! {wow her dress looks amazing in the lights} She gets points for thanking her mom.

8:28pmMatt Damon steps up to the mic and announces, “it’s me, the garbage man.” He introduces a clip from Best Motion Picture in Drama nominee Captain Phillips.

8:34pm Amy and Tina introduce the Theo Kingma, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who tells everyone to enjoy themselves.

8:36 Margot Robbie and Jonah Hill have a total teleprompter disaster and end up going old school and reading from paper – ends up being a pretty funny bit as they introduce a clip from The Wolf of Wall Street.

8:36pm Paula Patton and Aaron Eckhart present the nominees for best actor in a TV series, drama. Bryan Cranston wins the award for his performance in Breaking Bad.

{side note: Paula Patton’s dress is very comment worthy. Ok, actually just have a look at it and you will understand why people are talking about it.}

8:41pm Paula and Aaron present the award for Best TV series, Drama to Breaking Bad.

8:48pmThe real Philomena Lee and Steeve Coogan introduce a clip from Philomena.

8:49pm Usher, Sean Combs and Kate Beckinsale are a pretty odd trio to introduce the nominees for Best Original Score. Alex Ebert wins for All is Lost.
Sean Combs totally award bombs and says, “he was on a boat with me!” Alex Ebert confirms and says, “I had a jacket on and he came up from behind me and unbottoned it and said, let it flow!”

8:50pmThe odd trio continues presenting. They announce the nominees for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture and everyone gets ready for the song from Frozen to win. Sean Combs makes it the Sean show. Seriously, it is a complete takeover. When “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom wins Sean stars to sing the song before Bono can even begin to speak. Bono explains that the song is a disfunctional love story.

9:03pm Jon Voight winsBest Supporting Actor in a series, mini-series, or TV movie for his performance in Ray Donovan.
He lists his names to thank, stumbles a few names, and explains he is as nervous as everyone else

9:05pm A stunning Olivia Wilde introduces a clip from Her.

9:07pm Robert Downey Jr introduces the nominees for best actress in a motion picture, musical or comedy. Amy Adams wins for her performance in American Hustle.
Amy takes the stage already in tears. She says it is almost her 15th anniversary of moving to Los Angeles on a whim. She thanks the manager, Stacy O’Neil, who sent her on her 1st audition. She thanks her daughter for teaching her to accept joy and let go of dear.

9:15pm Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon introduce Sosie as Miss Golden Globes. Tina Fey introduces Mr. Golden Globes as her son from a previous relationship. Amy Poehler comes out as Randy, Mr. Golden Globes, and they do a bit where they guess who Mr. Golden Globe’s dad might be. “He’s in the audience!”

9:19pm Robin Wright wins Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama for her performance in House of Cards. She says she is surprised and not prepared.

9:44pm Jimmy Fallen walks out with Melissa McCarthy. Jimmy explains that Melissa was hit in the head with a sand bag and she now thinks she is Matt Damon. Melissa then proceeds to do a pretty funny impression of Matt. Jimmy and Melissa present the nominees for best actor in a mini-series or TV Movie.
Michael Douglas wins for his performance in Behind the Candelabra. Within his acceptance speech he thanks Catherine Zeta-Jones. The couple announced they were separated in August of 2013.

10:02pm Emma Stone (who is starring in Woody’s yet to be released Magic in the Moonlight) presents the Cecil B. DeMille award to Woody Allen.
Get ready for an interesting part of the evening…

10:07pm Diane Keaton accepts the award on Woody’s behalf and speaks to the women in his films. (Camera zooms in on Julia Roberts gazing happily at Diane speaking on stage.) She talks about her 45 year old friendship with Woody. Then she says Woody would demand the hook to pull her off the stage. There is a censored moment (NO idea what she said) and then Diane begins to sing, “make new friends” song. It’s sweet, quirky, a bit odd.

10:16pm Ben Affleck presents the nominees for best director of motion picture.

10:30pm Reese Witherspoon instroduces a clip from 12 Years a Slave.
(this was an odd pick of an actress to present this film)

10:36pm Chris Hemsworth and Niki Lauda (who the race film is based on) introduce a clip from Rush.

10:37pm A floral dress wearing Drew Barrymore makes her entrance to laughter and explains, “I got sent out wrong, shush!” She introduces all of the nominees for best motion picture, musical or comedy.
