At the Chime for Change concert in Twickenham, London, the Divas were out in force. Madonna made a ten minute impassioned speech whilst Beyoncé, J-Lo, Jessie J and Rita Ora were amongst the acts who rocked out to the 50,000 strong crowd.
The fundraising gig was organised by the Gucci-founded charity Chime For Change, Salma Hayek Pinault and Beyoncé and will fund approximately 200 projects in 70 countries, focusing on improving education, health and justice for women around the world.
During her speech, Madonna announced she will support girls’ education in Pakistan and Afghanistan through her Ray of Light Foundation. She challenged everyone to join her “Revolution of Love” to “end violence, promote peace, demand justice and help ensure education for girls everywhere.”
Beyoncé also supported feminism as she called out during her 45 minute set, “Who runs the world? Girls!”
She was joined by her rapper husband Jay-Z for a duet and also belted out versions of Run The World (Girls), Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), Halo and the Destiny’s Child classic Survivor.
“It’s time for change. Let’s chime for change. This is such an incredible night for me,” said the 31-year-old singer.
Leggy Blake Lively strode on stage to introduce acts, while her husband Ryan Reynolds waited in the wings. Other presenters were James Franco, Jessica Chastain, Freida Pinto and Zoe Saldana. Jennifer Lopez, fresh from creating a scandal after appearing in a risqué costume on Britain’s Got Talent, took to the stage with Mary J Blige and sang the Beatle’s classic ‘come together.’ Rita Ora and Florence and The Machine and Ellie Goulding, all took to the stage at the star-studded show at Twickenham Stadium, along with John Legend, Timbaland and Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon.
Gucci were underwriting the event so that all monies raised, minus VAT and service fees, reached the charity and the event managed to raise a whopping £2.8 million!
