For most of us, Monday was an ordinary day — but one lucky group of second and third-graders ended up getting a very special surprise!

Nick Lachey popped into an elementary school in Encino, California this week as part of The Literacy Project, a special initiative run by Pizza Hut and their nonprofit partner, First Book.

Not only did the singer treat the kids to a live reading of the book Secret Pizza Party, but they all got free books (plus pizza for lunch!).

Elementary students in Encino, California, were treated to a live book reading with multi-platinum recording artist, TV personality and father of three Nick Lachey, followed by a surprise pizza party on Monday, February 26. The reading celebration officially launched Pizza Hut: The Literacy Project fundraiser benefiting First Book.

“I had a blast,” Lachey tells Babble. “I think they really enjoyed the read-aloud of Secret Pizza Party – which by the way, is written by the same author as my son Camden’s favorite book, Dragons Love Tacos.”

Turns out, literacy is a cause that’s close to Lachey’s heart. Reading has been a huge part of his own childhood memories, he says.

“I remember carrying The Neverending Story with me to the beach at Lake Michigan,” Lachey tells Babble. “The Giving Tree was another favorite. I loved any book that inspired my imagination!”

Lachey also points out that it’s important to him to create similar memories for his kids. But even though his little ones are fortunate enough to enjoy bedtime stories every night, he realizes that not all children have that same opportunity.

“Unfortunately, some kids don’t have access to books in their homes or communities – they don’t have the opportunity to create those memories, and lack of access to age-appropriate and culturally relevant books is a huge barrier to meeting their full potential as adults,” says Lachey.

So, it goes without saying that for these children, the best part of this surprise was not just getting to see someone famous, but taking home a good book to read.

“The smiles we created during the event were awesome to experience, and it was great to see the kids so excited to take home a free book,” says Lachey.

We can’t help but smile, too!
