Editor’s Note: Babble and A Wrinkle in Time are both part of The Walt Disney Company.
You gotta admit, Mindy Kaling is pretty darn lucky these days. Not only did she land the role of a lifetime starring with Oprah Winfrey in A Wrinkle in Time, but she just gave birth to an adorable baby girl this past December. Still — unbelievably — things just got even more exciting.
As she recently told USA TODAY, her assistant got a call from Winfrey saying the legendary talk show host wanted to deliver a baby present. Of course, this is Oprah — so it wasn’t like someone was just going to swing by, box in hand.
Instead, she was sending a U-Haul truck.
“All you want in life is to hear that two men in a U-Haul truck are coming to your house because Oprah sent them,” said Kaling. “I was supposed to go to work that day (but I was like), I gotta be here.”
No kidding. Who wouldn’t? Known for her extravagant gifting (You get a car! You get a car!) it’s hard to imagine what a special delivery from Oprah Winfrey might be.
What showed up on her doorstep, Kaling said, was a hand-carved bookcase, filled with must-have classic children’s books. And with no less than 100 books in the collection, there was even one more heartfelt detail: They each had “Katherine’s Book Club” printed on them.
Kaling recounted the story with Winfrey sitting beside her in a promotional interview for A Wrinkle in Time.
Winfrey herself added that the gift wasn’t quite what she had envisioned. “It wasn’t as perfect as I wanted it to be,” she said.
Apparently the bookcase was supposed to look like the treehouse that Kaling’s movie character lived in.
“It was the best I could do,” said Winfrey.
Even so — we can’t imagine a more amazing gift!
