Sorry ladies, but Prince Harry is officially off the market.
Clarence House released a statement this morning saying, “His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle became engaged in London earlier this month.”

For those of you who don’t know, Harry’s future wife Meghan is an actress and humanitarian originally from Los Angeles, California. She has starred in the hit US television series Suits and in films such as Horrible Bosses and Remember Me. In 2015 she was named the UN Women’s Advocate for Political Participation and Leadership — proving she is more than well equipped for a life of service. Back in September, Markle spoke openly to Vanity Fair about her relationship with Harry saying, “We’re two people who are really happy and in love.”
According to Clarence House, the newly engaged couple have been dating since July 2016 and have plans to marry in Spring 2018. The couple revealed intimate details about their relationship during a sit-down interview with the BBC’s Mishal Husain today, explaining how they were set up on a blind date.
“I had never heard of Meghan before and I was beautifully surprised when I saw her sitting there and thought ‘well I really need to up my game!'” said Prince Harry.
They connected immediately and continued to spend one-on-one time together.
“We camped out with each other under the stars [in Botswana] for five days. We were really by ourselves which was crucial to me to make sure we had a chance to get to know each other,” Harry recalled.
Naturally, the Prince has informed his grandmother, the Queen, and other close members of the royal family about the engagement — and they couldn’t be happier for him. Harry even joked that the Queen’s corgis took to Meghan right away, while they have been barking at him for “the last 33 years.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said of the engagement:

know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.'

Harry also proved that he is keeping things traditional, revealing that he asked Meghan Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, for permission before he proposed. Both Ragland and Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, are thrilled about their daughter’s future with Harry, wishing them “a lifetime of happiness.” It’s clear that Harry and Doria have already established a strong bond, with the royal describing his future mother-in-law as “amazing.”

With Meghan’s mom being involved in the proposal, it’s only fitting that Harry honor his own mother as well. Harry designed the stunning engagement ring for Meghan himself and kept both women in mind while crafting it. “The ring is yellow gold because that’s [Meghan’s] favorite. The main stone I sourced from Botswana and the stones on the side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure she’s with us on this crazy journey together,” he said.
And wow — it is truly gorgeous.
It has meant so much to Meghan to meet Diana’s family and learn more about the woman behind the icon through Harry’s memories of his mother. During the interview Meghan said: “I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [Princess Diana’s jewelry] and obviously not being able to meet his mom it is so important to me to know that she is a part of this with us … It’s perfect.”
When asked if he thinks his mother would approve of the match, Harry was certain in his answer. “They’d be thick as thieves without question. I think she would be over the moon jumping up and down and so excited for me and also be best friends with Meghan.”
Prince Harry has been very vocal recently about how he has grieved his mother’s death and the lasting impact his loss has had on him. He continues to keep his mother’s memory alive, telling the BBC, “It’s days like today where I really miss having her around and miss being able to share the happy news, but with the ring and with everything else going around I’m sure she’s with us.”
As for the actual proposal itself? Here’s how it all went down according to Harry and Meghan:
“It was a standard, typical, cozy night.” the couple said. “We were just trying to roast a chicken. It was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee,” Meghan gushed.
“She didn’t even let me finish! ‘Can I say yes? Can I say yes? Can I say yes?'” Harry recalled. “Then there were hugs and I said ‘Can I give you the ring?'”
Is this not the sweetest thing you’ve ever heard? The rest of their lives may be an extravagant whirlwind filled with press and media coverage, but they’ll always have this private moment to reflect on together.
“At the end of the day she chooses me and I choose her and no matter what we have to tackle together or individually it will always be us together as a team,” said Harry.
While these two are clearly in love and enjoying their time together, it is no secret that joining the royal family comes with great responsibility. “I did not have any understanding of what it would be like,” said Meghan, but the couple noted they have learned to navigate these uncharted waters together.
“The fact that she’ll be really unbelievably good at the job part of it as well is a huge relief to me. She’ll be able to deal with everything else that comes with it. We’re a fantastic team,” said Harry. “The whole family has come together and been a huge support.”
As for children? Harry joked that the couple don’t have any on the way as of yet saying, “Not currently, no … one step at a time. Hopefully we’ll start a family of our own in the near future.” It seems like Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Royal Baby #3 may have some new cousins joining them soon(ish)!
While many of us in the Babble office have mixed feelings about Harry’s engagement (ranging from pure jealousy to elation to total and utter devastation), we also couldn’t be happier for the happy couple. If there’s anyone that deserves true love, it’s Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
