By now, I think it’s safe to say that Super Bowl LII is gonna go down in history for more than just the Philadelphia Eagles’ first-ever win. It was also the night Justin Timberlake kept all of us on the edge of our seats with his epic halftime show. Well, all of us except 7th-grader Ryan McKenna, who is now being affectionally referred to throughout the Interwebs as “Super Bowl Selfie Kid.”
In case you missed it, JT took to the stands during his performance Sunday night, where he was greeted by excited fans, all singing the lyrics to “Can’t Stop the Feelin'” right along with him. Understandably, most fans were straight-up freaking out to be that close to Justin. But Ryan? By all accounts, he was pretty chill about the whole encounter. So chill, in fact, that he appeared to be staring down at his phone for much of it.
It led many of us watching from our couches at home to wonder: WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW THAN JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, WHO IS LITERALLY BREATHING THE SAME AIR AS YOU RIGHT NOW?!
And by “many of us” I mean me; mostly me.
Twitter wondered if he was busy Googling just who Justin Timberlake really is. (After all, the kid was literally born two years after *NSYNC broke up.)
Some couldn’t get over how incredibly unenthused he seemed about the whole thing:
While others hailed him as a kind of hero for it …
Either way, Ryan did manage to snap a selfie with Timberlake while the whole world was watching, and woke up this morning something of a viral star, with over 8,000 new followers on social media and an interview with Good Morning America under his belt. It was there that the 13-year-old finally filled the world in on just what was going through his mind in those moments, and it’s probably not what you were thinking.
“It was crazy,” Ryan told GMA. ” … all the media just rushed me and it was crazy.”
He also clarified about just what he was doing during those moments he was caught staring down at his phone: “I had a video going and my phone shut off, so that’s why I was staring at my phone,” he shared, adding that Justin is pretty much his “favorite singer,” so he was definitely psyched to be in his midst.
What made matters even more exciting (not that you could totally tell by Ryan’s face at the time) was that he had no idea Timberlake would be walking through his section — let alone dancing right beside him. He did get the heads up — by someone he refers to in the interview as “the Super Bowl halftime lady” — that he was seated in a “special section,” but he didn’t really know what that meant.
Still, once JT swung through and posed for a selfie, Ryan says the moment was pretty much “perfect.”
Honestly, I can’t tell you how jealous I am of this kid right now. A selfie with JT — on national TV — in the middle of the Super Bowl halftime show? I mean, it doesn’t get much better than that. Though I’m 99 percent sure that if I, too, were caught on camera in that moment, I’d probably lean in for the snapshot, only be told my camera roll is full — like my phone so LOVINGLY tells me every 10 minutes these days.
Oh well, that moment belongs to you, Ryan. Enjoy those 8,000 new followers!
