Sandra Bullock announced some big news this morning — she adopted her beautiful 3.5-year-old daughter Laila!
Bullock is already a mom to son Louis, 5, whom she adopted back in 2010. And according to Bullock, it was Louis who really pushed to bring his little sister home. “Louis spearheaded this whole journey,” Bullock explained to People.
After an initial transition period that required “patience and plenty of assurance,” Louis and Laila are now inseparable. “I knew she was scared,” Bullock said, “and all I wanted was for her to know Louis and I weren’t going anywhere.”
But the process, which took three years, was not exactly smooth.
Bullock fostered Laila before adopting her, and she often feared the public scrutiny of her job would put her adoption in jeopardy — a fear that proved justified.
After a photographer took a photo of Bullock and Laila before her adoption was finalized, Bullock learned that she would not be able to keep their secret a secret for long, explaining she felt like she was in “witness protection.”
“The next day, I learned that a photo of [Laila] was being shopped around for sale to every outlet around the world. I had promised and legally agreed to protect her from something like this, and here I was chasing down lawyers — having them begging them to keep her safe.”
And to make matters worse, Bullock explained that “most foster children are in foster care because they were taken from their birth homes under tragic circumstances — and the last thing I wanted was to bring more harm to her because of the nature of my job.”
Thankfully for Sandra, Louis, and Laila, the adoption went through and they can now be public with their story — while still maintaining the privacy they all deserve.
Bullock, it seems, has never been happier at home. “My family is blended and diverse, nutty, and loving and understanding. That’s a family.”
“I can tell you absolutely, the exact right children came to me at the exact right time,” she continued.
And with a new little one in the mix comes all the exciting new experiences of having a second child. In this case, Laila has brought “pink and glitter in the house mixed with LEGOs and Batmans.”
As well as a whole lot of love, we are sure.
