Can You Guess Your State’s Favorite Holiday Movie?

One of the things we look forward to most during the holiday season is snuggling up with our family to watch festive movies. With so many favorites like ElfThe Santa Claus, and Home Alone airing round the clock, it’s hard to pick which ones to watch.

Thanks to Cable TV, we can now simply defer to our state’s holiday movie of choice. They have conducted some extensive research — and the results may surprise you.

They took the top-rated holiday movies (as ranked by viewers from AMC) and cross-referenced them with Google Trends state data from the past decade, to see which were most likely to be watched in each town.

It’s no surprise that Home Alone was the winner, with 10 states preferring this flick, closely followed by Elf. However, we are a bit shocked to see that The Santa ClauseRudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, and the cult classic, A Christmas Story only received one vote each!

Other contenders? National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation had 5 votes, which should make Sparky and company proud. Nightmare Before Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life, and Scrooged were all tied with 4 votes a piece.

As for regional results? Cable TV discovered that “viewers gravitate toward films that have an element of the familiar,” which is why the following totally make sense: New York selected It’s a Wonderful Life, Vermont chose White Christmas, and Illinois went with Home Alone.

Additionally, Cable TV discovered that the majority of the Western states all selected Nightmare Before Christmas as their preferred holiday classic. They noted, “Perhaps the warmer temperatures and the lack of snow put a little more spook into the West’s seasonal preferences.” Could be!

No matter what movie you choose as your favorite, take some time to hunker down this winter and binge some classics with your family. We fully support any plan to binge-watch them all to decide once and for all which film is your family’s fave — just don’t forget the snacks!
