One of my earliest childhood memories is sitting on my parent’s bed, giddily watching Supermarket Sweep as contestants raced through the aisles for cans of tomato sauce and giant rolls of paper towels like their lives depended on it. I may not have had a clue what was actually going on, but even then, I knew some quality entertainment when I saw it.
Needless to say, I was pretty psyched (along with every other game show fanatic out there) to hear that after 13 years off the air, Supermarket Sweep is finally coming back to TV! In a press release issued this week, FremantleMedia announced it had acquired the rights to the epic competition and has plans to return it to the air once more.
Believe it or not though, this isn’t the first time the show has been brought back. It first ran from 1965-67, was revived again by Lifetime in the mid-’90s, and came back once more from 2000-03 on the PAX Network. It’s clearly timeless entertainment.
For those of you who don’t remember its premise, three teams of two answer pop-culture questions and solve puzzles based on supermarket products from around the world. But the best part by far is the frantic race to the finish line at the end of each episode, when contestants grab a shopping cart and go wild trying to shop smarter and faster than their rivals and find hidden prizes in the aisles.
I mean, what more could you want from a game show?!
While a date has yet to be set for Supermarket Sweep‘s return, it’s never too soon to strap on your best running shoes and take a quick lap the next time you’re picking up the family groceries — you know, just for practice.
