With all the bad news out there, it’s easy to forget that good people are making lives better with small acts of loving kindness. On November 9th, Spring Herbison Bowlin from Clarksdale, Mississippi posted what has to be one of the most inspiring goodwill deeds caught on camera.
The post shows the image of an elderly man and Walmart employee counting change at the checkout register. Bowlin explains that the man looked back at him with an apologetic look in his eyes as he reached into his pockets to remove handfuls of change to pay for his items.
We live in a modern world that rarely sees anyone writing checks or paying with change anymore, so the mere sight of it must bring a lot of irrational ire towards this man. The elderly man immediately reacts to both the cashier and Bowlin, who explains:
“He miscounts and starts to get flustered. Gives me a muttered, ‘I’m so sorry.’ His hands and voice are shaking. This beautiful cashier takes his hands and dumps all the change on the counter and says, ‘This is not a problem, honey. We will do this together.’ He continues to apologize to both of us as we reassure him it’s ok. They get his transaction handled and he shuffles away.”
I already love this cashier, don’t you? But it gets better. Bowlin’s post continues:
“I looked at this wonderful woman and said, ‘Thank-you for being so patient with him.’ She shakes her head and replies, ‘You shouldn’t have to thank me, baby. What’s wrong with our world is we’ve forgotten how to love one another.’ I want to be more like her.”
When I think about all the reasons to be grumpy and impatient in a day, like bills piling, the mountain of laundry on my dining room table, all the darn extracurricular activities for my kids, it helps to stop and remember that there are kind and patient people who have their eye on what really counts: treating everyone with love.
Some of the commenters know exactly what I mean. In the post that has been shared more than 49K times and attracted thousands of comments, many people expressed gratitude to the anonymous Walmart employee who showed so much courtesy and patience.
One commenter wrote, “These are the ‘Walmart people’ we should be watching!” Another agreed, saying, “I [just] love how she handled the situation. We need more people like her in the world.”
If we all focus on compassion and kindness in our daily lives, there can be.
