20 Eco-Friendly Beauty Favorites

Our skin can absorb over 60% of what we put on it — that goes for moisturizers, foundations, even lipstick.

But do you know what your skin is absorbing?

In celebration of yesterday’s Earth Day, I thought I’d share some of my favorite natural/organic beauty brands that I’ve actually used and loved. (I’ve used my fair share of natural deodorants, shampoos and lipsticks that sadly haven’t cut it.)

More and more beauty brands are taking a healthier, more eco-focused approach to not only their products, but also their manufacturing. Wind-powered factories, Post Consumer recycled packaging, fair trade practices through organic farms, etc.

Take a look at 20 of my favorite eco-friendly beauty brands that are as effective as they are healthy:

  • Tarte 1 of 20
Tarte is one of my favorite beauty brands, regardless of the fact that their line features wholesome, natural ingredients. Take their wildly popular cheek stain, for instance, which is a water-based formula with "Skinvigorating" ingredients like a T5 Super Fruit Complex (goji, acai, maracuja, acerola, and pomegranate) and mineral-derived pigments. (No parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or petrochemicals.)

  • Down to Earth Kit 2 of 20
Speaking of Tarte, they teamed up with The Beauty Department
for a four-piece Earth Day kit that will donate 20% of the proceeds to WinetoWater.org, which provides clean drinking water to countries all over the world.

The kit includes full-size products including lip tint, mascara, blue, and liquid eyeliner — all in an eco-chic quilted bag. Buy from Tarte
  • Cargo 3 of 20
Cargo's PlantLove collection is made with 100% natural and organic ingredients — no parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, synthetic chemicals, etc. Even their packaging is made entirely out of corn! I especially love their lip color pigments.

  • Korres 4 of 20
This just might be my favorite beauty brand in existence. Everything that they make — from their masks to their lip glosses — are some of the best I've ever used. And the fact that they're one of the most eco-friendly brands out there only adds to their appeal. Korres only uses biodegradable ingredients (which means no mineral oils or silicones), recyclable packaging, and eco-friendly manufacturing practices (such as using a steam generator to heat their facility, rather than electrical heating).

  • Aveda 5 of 20
Aveda might be the most popular natural beauty brand in the world — used in salons and spas across the country. Aveda has a "green ingredient promise," which means they only use naturally derived ingredients, with 90% of their ingredients certified organic. They also use Post Consumer recycled packaging, as well as 100% wind power in their manufacturing.

  • Jurlique 6 of 20
You may know Jurlique more for their quality products than their natural ingredients, but they use a blend of herbs and flowers in all of their formulas. In fact, many of their botanicals are hand-grown on their 153-acre farm in South Australia.

  • Burt’s Bees 7 of 20
Burt's Bees is committed to natural materials — from their 99% natural formulas (about half of their line is 100% natural), their Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) packaging, and their commitment to preserving animal and human rights with free-trade and fair working conditions.

Burt's Bees biggest goal is to be "the greenest personal care company on earth," which they're hoping to achieve by 2020 with a variety of initiatives — including becoming a carbon-free company that operates on 100% renewable energy. They want no waste in landfills, and they want their manufacturing facilities to be LEED certified.

This botanical-based skincare line all feature Jasmine Absolute — an essential oil that naturally rebalances skin with its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immuno-stimulating properties. Clark's Botanicals is all about natural healing and natural solutions.

  • Yes to Carrots 9 of 20
This is a fantastic skincare line that's packed with organic fruits and veggies with no parabens, petroleum, SLS, and phthalates. They have four different lines: carrots to "nourish", cucumbers to "soothe," tomatoes to "clear," and blueberries for "age refresh."
Buy from Yes to Carrots, or shop at Target, Whole Foods, Walmart, or your local drugstore.
  • Origins 10 of 20
Origins is another wildly popular and fairly accessible beauty brand, which uses only natural and certified organic ingredients, with no parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oil — the list goes on. They don't even use animal ingredients. Origins also manufactures with renewable resources like wind energy.

  • Juice Beauty 11 of 20
A favorite of mine, Juice Beauty is committed to using certified organic ingredients, as well as applying their Eco Values to every aspect of production — including manufacturing with solar energy, packaging with recycled paper and soy ink, and supporting USDA certified organic farmers. Plus their products are as effective as they are healthy.

  • Josie Maran 12 of 20
Supermodel Josie Maran launched her own cosmetics line with a strong eco-focus. All of her products are packed with botanical ingredients and packaged in recyclable and biodegradable materials. Josie Maran infuses every product with Argan Oil — a fruit-derived oil that's packed with antioxidants, vitamin E, carotene, phenols, essential fatty acids, phenolic acid, and squalene, which moisturizes (while balancing oily patches), reduces fine lines and wrinkles, repairs sun damage, and reduces redness.

  • L’Occitane 13 of 20
L'Occitane has several eco-friendly products, but their most popular has to be their Certified Organic Pure Shea Butter, which functions as a multi-purpose beauty balm. Besides containing 100% natural certified organic Shea Butter, it's produced in a fair-trade agreement with cooperatives of women in West Africa.

  • Nude Skincare 14 of 20
This skincare line isn't cheap, but it's made without any harmful chemicals like parabens, sulphates, GMOs, PEGs, phthalates, and the list goes on. They also avoid non-biodegradable mineral oils and silicones, as well as source as many organic and fair-trade ingredients as possible.

For instance, their Age Defence Moisturiser (shown) uses Milk Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid and Orchid to firm and hydrate, and Pre and Probiotics to prevent premature aging.

  • Kiss My Face 15 of 20
Kiss My Face is one of my favorite brands, and the fact that they discontinued their tinted moisturizer line put me into a momentary depression. Beyond using sustainable, plant-based ingredients, Kiss My Face is committed to using Post Consumer recycled content in ever bottle, packaging box, store display, etc. They're also more affordable than most natural beauty lines — and they have a fantastic kids' line!

  • Jane Iredale 16 of 20
Jane Iredale PureGloss in Soft Peach is, hands down, the best lip color I've ever used. (And most of their lip colors are vegan and gluten-free!) Their mineral makeup collection, in general, is designed to be as healthy as possible for your skin.

  • Suki 17 of 20
Suki sources fair trade, organic, biodynamic, vegan, and even local products as often as possible — maintaining a cruelty-free "do no harm" core philosophy. Everything is made, labeled and shipped from their Massachusetts headquarters with virtually no carbon output from their processing. Even their packing and shipping is as eco-friendly as possible.

The Suki Exfoliating Foaming Cleanser is one of their best selling, which uses sugar, rice flour, lemongrass, and orange to cleanse and smooth skin.

  • Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap 18 of 20
This is one of the most popular, raved-about, cult-classic products in the natural beauty realm which can be used for just about everything. 100% biodegradable and vegan with no detergents or foaming agents, it's the mildest yet most effective soap you'll ever use.

  • Pangea Organics 19 of 20
Your body wash with chemical foaming agents could take close to 200 years to break down, while Pangea Organics bodycare products start biodegrading in 48 hours. All Pangea Organics products are hand-made in small batches, sourced from organic farmers through fair trade practices. And of course their extensive collection doesn't contain any questionable, potentially harmful ingredients.

  • Dr. Hauschka 20 of 20
A favorite among celebrities, Dr. Hauschka skincare products are some of the most impressive I've ever used. Dr. Hauschka's original mission (70 years ago) was to "support the healing of humanity and the earth," and it's a mission that's still enforced today. Beyond the purity of their ingredients, they use ecologically sound methods to grow and source ingredients, as well as launch international fair trade initiatives. And as I said, the products really work.
