4 Ways to Decorate on Zero Budget

Decorating or redecorating a home can be a daunting task in and of itself. But add on top of that a zero budget for getting the decorating done, and you might find yourself in a bit of a pickle! We don’t always have a budget for projects like redecorating our homes, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible! Where there is a will there is a way, and it helps if you can get a little creative about those ways, too. Here are four ways to decorate with absolutely no budget!

1. Monochromatic Decorating

This is one of my favorite ways to decorate! The idea is pretty simple. Just go around your house gathering cool knickknacks that are the same color or at least in the same color family, and put them on display for all to see and admire. They don’t have to be related in any way. In fact, it might be better if they aren’t! Because they are all the same color, being together will create a fun pop of color and make the space look really put together. Of course, you should also keep in mind the placement of each item. You want it to look awesome, right? A mantle is the perfect place to decorate with one color. Or even an end table or coffee table would be awesome.

2. Put Your Pretty Books to Use!

We all have books that are absolutely gorgeous, right? But they are most likely hidden in a closet or smothered on a bookshelf with other much less visually aesthetic books. Why not put them to good use and arrange them out for all of your guests to see? You could have them on a bare shelf so they really pop, or you could add them to a few other items like a vase or a framed picture or painting for a more complete look. A huge bonus with decorating with books is that they look very pretty but also make you seem super intellectual and well-rounded. No one needs to know that the books haven’t actually been read in so many years, right?

3. Paint It!

Yes, this couch was painted. Awesome, right? If you already have a great deal of paint on-hand like I do, then yes, this is a zero-budget project. But if you don’t, it is still minimal cost! A few bucks for some paint, and you get a whole new couch? Yes, please! If you don’t feel super confident or comfortable painting a couch, then I am sure you have some other items in your home that could use a quick makeover. A mirror? A bed? A dining table? My sister inherited this plain, drab table from my parents years ago, and with just a coat of paint, she transformed it into something I wanted to have in my house! Just be sure to pick a color that will add to your space, not take away from it. And if you have a piece of older furniture and want to make it feel more modern, try painting it with a modern color like black. You will be amazed at how far a coat of paint can go!

We all have a collection or two that would look great if it were put out for all to see. For a long time, I collected hippos. If it was a hippo, chances are I wanted it. I used to keep them hidden away, but then I was decorating my living room and thought to myself, “Hey, my hippos would look awesome right there.” And they did! Having a collection or two as decor is a great way to use what you already have and let your freak-flag fly! You know what I’m talking about. We all have quirky sides to us, and it definitely shows in our collections. They are a great way to show off our personalities while decorating our home at the same time!
