A Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes at The Honest Company with Jessica Alba

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Jessica Alba and touring the offices of her latest venture, The Honest Company. She took us behind the scenes to share her desktop, her favorite pieces of decor, and how she manages to build the world’s first affordable organic baby-product subscription service with her kids right by her side. Come along for the tour and hear from Jessica in her own words…

"When Christopher Gavigan traveled to our box manufacturer, he remarked how incredibly cool and creative their business sign made from corrugated cardboard looked in their office. To our surprise, a few weeks later we found our very own "Honest" sign made from the same material included in the first shipment of our 100% recycled boxes. Again, a sign that we have the best partners! (Sorry for the pun…I couldn't resist.)"

    The Perfect Desk
"The vintage orange tanker desk was my first purchase for The Honest Company office. I'm a big fan of finding second-hand furniture and repurposing it at home and work. I purchased this piece on Craigslist, and Christopher Gavigan used it at our first office's now legendary around here."
  • A Must-Read 3 of 12
    A Must-Read
"When I was pregnant with Honor, I read Christopher Gavigan's book Healthy Child Healthy World: Creating a Cleaner, Greener, Safer Home. I learned about toxic chemicals in everyday products like baby shampoo, diapers, home furnishings, and household cleaners. The book inspired me to create because I needed and wanted natural products that were better than the options available in the marketplace. Turns out, a lot of other parents did too. Today, Christopher is not only one of my friends, but also is my partner and serves as the Chief Products Officer. And it's great working together to offer parents accessible, practical eco solutions like those discussed in his book."

Bring Your Kids to Work Days
"Honor and Haven visit me at the office a lot! It's a great way to keep my kids close and entertained when I work, while still letting me sneak in some one-on-one time with them during my breaks. My partners Brian Lee, Christopher Gavigan, and Sean Kane also have little kids that love to visit the kids corner! Creating a working environment that embraces children is very important to us—and what a bonus to hear their giggles and see their smiling faces in the background. They're not only the perfect source of inspiration, but they're really why we created Honest in the first place."

    An Open Floor Plan
"We like having an open floor plan, or 'pit' as we call, because it encourages deeper levels of engagement between co-workers, it reduces the cycle time on decisions, and it builds a connected team mentality and richer culture. You quickly get to know people's music and food tastes too!"

"That one picture is of my niece, Brooklyn, in our Honest size 6 diapers. We have all the babies and children featured on our diapers pictured around the office, most of which are family or friends of someone from our team."

"I love being right in the mix and connecting with the team. By sitting together in an open workspace, our collaborations and energy are stronger…plus, I love the organic way our ideas come about. As the saying goes, two heads are definitely better than one, in this case we have 15. But I'm not gonna lie, there are some challenges when it comes to conference calls and meetings, but that's what we use the rooms around the perimeter of the office for!"
  • Haven’s Seat 8 of 12
    Haven's Seat
"On my Twitter feed or our Honest Facebook page, you'll find numerous photos of Haven sitting at my desk chair. She's our number one product tester! All kidding aside, when she joins me at my desk, she's usually eating. Otherwise she's playing in the excersuacer next to my desk or playing in the kids corner."

Does Jessica really take calls with Haven at her desk?
"Yes, Haven has sat next to me while I've made calls but usually I'm just answering emails. Taking meetings with the baby there is virtually impossible..."

    All Dolled Up
"I got this sweet doll at a Lanvin dinner party. The designer for Lanvin, Alber Elbaz, designed my wedding dress, so he holds a special place in my heart. These Lanvin dolls are handmade by women in Africa and all the proceeds go towards helping these women pull themselves out of poverty."
  • The Kudos Wall 11 of 12
    The Kudos Wall
"The Kudos Wall is a collage of cards, e-mails, and pictures we've received from members who took time to share their delightful experience with our products and Honest Support Team. The members' comments are displayed on the wall outside Honest Support (Customer Service) for all to see and celebrate the impact we have on creating a happier and healthier world. We really strive to create products and an experience that will make customers happy, so we're truly grateful for all the feedback we get."

    Jessica & I
I asked Jessica what blogs she reads in her few spare moments. Here's what she said: "There are too many to name, but I really enjoy PUREMamas, Who What Wear, Remodelista, saltandnectar, SwissMiss, Inhabitots, Pioneer Woman, Apartment Therapy's Re-nest, The 99 Percent, and, of course, Babble! That's off the top of my head."
