The (Free!) Application That Anders is Currently Hooked on

When I was Anders’ age pop-up books were the height of entertainment for me. I loved the way they brought a story to life, gave it dimension, made it tangible.

These days, I get little more than a raised eye brow from my children when I pull a pop-up book from the shelf and suggest it as  afternoon entertainment. Don’t get me wrong. They love to read and to learn, but there are so many more ways to do so than there were when I was their age, ways that even I have to admit make pop-up books look, well, lame.

I bought my first iPhone a little over two years ago and it took almost no time for me to realize that I had not just purchased something that would benefit myself, but also my family. A cursory look through the app store revealed a world of entertainment for Anders and Danica. I am constantly on the look out for new and fun virtual entertainment, but sometimes it can be difficult to find a game that is age appropriate and easy for both my 3- and 5-year-old to navigate without assistance.

Over the weekend I downloaded the Jake’s Never Land Pirate School app by Disney Junior. Both my children love that cartoon and I couldn’t wait to see what the game had to offer. I always take a quick look around any application I download for Anders and Danica to get a feel for how it is played before I hand it over. I happened to be in an airport traveling home when I tried this game and ended up spending about half an hour playing it simply because it was that fun. I couldn’t wait to get home and show it to the kids.

Having downloaded dozens of games over the last two years, it is very rare in my experience to find a free application with as many features as this one offers. My favorite part is that it puts your child right in the game, allowing them to take a photograph of themselves that is then placed onto the body of a pirate in the game.  Kids can also play musical instruments, steer a ship, fly with pixie dust, and participate in a map and spyglass seek and find.

You can download Jake’s Never Land Pirate School app here for your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Also new from Disney Junior is the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally Appisode available for iPad. You can download that one here. Both are free!

If your kids love Disney Junior as much as mine do, check out Disney Junior WATCH where you can find full length episodes of popular show online at and via the Disney Junior WATCH app on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Join us August 8th at 9 PM EST for a Disney Junior Twitter party! You could win an iPad. RSVP at and use the hashtags #spon and #mackidtips
