10 Life-Saving Safety Tips that Could Potentially Save You and Your Child’s Life

I remember being 7-years-old walking with my older sister to grab the mail. In a blink of an eye, I remember a blue old car pull up next to me. Inside was a heavy-set man with red short hair. He told me to get inside his car — he was going to give me candy. Having been taught stranger danger, I immediately started to scream and run. The man quickly did a U-turn and sped off. The police were called, but he was never found.  Twelve years later, that story still brings me chills. I was very fortunate that day, and unfortunately that is not the case for the many children that go missing.

But having a plan potentially saved my life. As an adult, it’s important to have a plan as well. A few months ago I attended a women’s safety class that was hosted in my neighborhood by a former FBI agent. She taught us so many things and I wanted to share some of those with you.

This tip might sound easy enough, but many times we can get distracted and not be aware of our surroundings.  Look out for suspicious things, and know who is around you at all times.

I was completely guilty of spending so much time scavenging my purse trying to find my keys. It's important to have them ready before you even walk out of the mall, grocery store or whenever you're out and about.

Lock your car door as soon as you get inside. The FBI Agent showed us a very chilling video of a man getting inside a woman's unlocked passenger door while she was getting inside at a Target parking lot—and it was in plain daylight.

When walking around, don't walk with your head down. Instead, walk with your back straight, head and shoulders back. Make solid eye contact and let other people you know they are there—you see them.

I signed up for this site after attending the class. You can receive free email-alerts when a registered sexual offender or predator moves into your neighborhood and also see how many of them are currently living close to you. You can sign-up here

  • Park Your Car Tail-First, Instead of Head First 7 of 10

I would have never thought about this, but the FBI agent mentioned most people park their cars headfirst, so by parking tail first you can find your car a lot easier. I also like to valet park when I'm at the mall.

It's important to always let someone know where you are going. Whenever I leave the house I call my husband to tell him where I'll be, even if it's just a quick run to the supermarket.

Never ever run your car on empty. I was guilty of this one as well. You want to make sure you have enough gas to get you to where you are going and back.

Overall, trust your instinct. If something doesn't seem right—it's probably not.
