9 Things My Husband Learned in 9 Months of Being a New Dad

A few months back, I did a post on “8 Things I Had Learned in 8 Weeks of Being a New Mom.” Now that our son turned 9 months old, I thought it would be fun to get my husband’s thoughts on some of the things he has learned and share it with you — naturally! It’s always interesting to get a man’s perspective, I feel.

Here are 9 things my husband has learned in 9 months of being a new dad.

  • 1. Paternity Leave Was One of the Best Decisions I Made 1 of 9

I was very fortunate to have been able to take a 3-week paternity leave. It was the best decision I made, not only for our son, but also for my wife. You go through a lot of adjustments in those first few weeks (sleep schedules, new routines, etc.). I am happy I was able to be there for my wife and go through it together.

  • 2. It’s Ok to Get Help 2 of 9

When the baby was first born, my mother-in-law offered to stay with us for one week. I'm not going to lie, but I was definitely hesitant at first. I mean, I love my mother-in-law, but one week?! At the end of that week, I was wondering if she could stay another. Having her there really helped us both a lot.

  • 3. Every Month Gets More Exciting 3 of 9

As the months go by, it just gets more exciting. He's becoming a little person, with his own personality. He doesn't want to sleep 24/7 anymore, which means we can do things like go to the park or splash in the pool.

  • 4. I’ve Mastered Poop Reading 4 of 9

I've learned to tell whether my son is not feeling well based on the color and frequency of his poop, something I could not do before. So you mean mustard with seeds means what?!

  • 5. I Have Mastered Making Baby Food 5 of 9

I would have never thought making baby food was easy, until I learned how to make it myself. It's not as difficult as it sounds.

  • 6. I Enjoy Wearing a Baby Carrier 6 of 9

Yes, I said it. I have friends at work who say they would never wear a baby carrier, but I actually really enjoy wearing a baby carrier (we own 4 of them). There's something about having your baby close to you that bonds you together. Plus, it frees up your hands so you can get things done.

  • 7. It’s the Best Job in the World 7 of 9

Being a father really is best job in the world. Seeing him grow each day just blows my mind away.

  • 8. My Music Collection Has Been Replaced with Baby Songs 8 of 9

The music on my iPod has been taken over by child songs such as "La Iguana y el Perezoso" and "You Are My Sunshine."

  • 9. They Grow Up Really Fast 9 of 9

Everyone says it, but it is very true. I find it hard to believe that in just 3 months, we'll be celebrating our son's first birthday. I go through pictures on my iPhone and tell my wife, "Remember when he was this little?"
