Hey Mom’s! Here’s How to Get Rid of Your Grumpy PantsMari Hernandez-Tuten
When I’m in a bad mood I can hear myself telling mi hijo (my son who is prone to bad moods), “Please go back up stairs and change out of those grumpy pants.” But, there have been many mornings when I’ve forgotten to change out of my grumpy pants.
Life can get messy, so the grumpies are inevitable. They will creep up on you, and before you know it you’re walking around with a gray cloud over your head.
Our attitudes are contagious, so here are some tips to bring the sunshine back into your home:
1. Take a Moment to Cool Down and Just Stop
I recently watching a funny movie clip where a lady is at her counselor’s office, and she’s going on and on about how depressed, frustrated, guilty and awful she feels. She continues to complain, until her counselor finally yells, “STOP”. When I start to feel myself getting agitated, sometimes I have to remind myself to take a deep breath and just stop.
2. Replace All Negative Thoughts
Fill your mind with positive thoughts. What works best for me is praying and singing — sometimes I’ll say a scripture from the Bible over and over again, or I’ll sing something joyful outloud.
3. Be Thankful
Along the same lines as step two, count your blessings. Name three things you are thankful for.
4. Give Yourself a Time Out
If you’re in a bad mood because you have company coming in 30 minutes and your house is a mess, go to the bathroom and lock the door. Give yourself a breather and follow steps one through three.
5. Talk About it. Accept it. Move On.
Accept that you’re in a bad mood and move on. It always helps to talk through your feelings to help clear your mind, but if you don’t have someone to talk to, than journal. If you need to ask someone for forgiveness because of what you did in your bad mood, go for it. It’s important to move on, because life goes on whether we are in a good or bad mood, so why not live your life with joy.
6. Keep Yourself Healthy and Refreshed
It’s most important of all to make sure you’re getting sleep and are eating well, because if you are neglecting either one of these you’re definitely setting yourselve up for a day full of the grumpies.
