As a mom, I love watching movies with a good mother character. Someone authentic and inspiring whom I can also relate and be challenged by. Moms and mom-figures in movies are sometimes our best role models. I’ve compiled a gallery of 15 of my favorite moms in film.

1.  Karen Beckman, Parenthood

Possibly the most sweetest, gentlest movie mom, Karen Buckman is a devoted wife and mother who delights in the beautiful imperfections and roller coasters of life- the kind of parent I long to be like.

2. Sybil Stone, The Family Stone

First of all, I dream of having a house like the Stone’s for my own large family. And I admire Sybil’s strength and courage as the matriarch and glue that keeps her family together. And even more, her devotion to each of her children and their unique spirits.

3. Mrs. Gump, Forest Gump

Mrs. Gump taught her son Forrest early on that he could do and be anything (and he pretty much DID and WAS anything he wanted.) Not to mention a few other things she might have “done” along the way to see to it Forrest had everything he needed. I only hope my own children listen and hold my words as close to their hearts.

4. Christine Collins, The Changeling

Such a heart-wrenching story I could barely watch, but single mother Christine loses her son and is given a different boy instead. She continues her search for her real son while loving this stranger. Oh, I can’t imagine…

5. Leigh Anne Tuohy, The Blind Side

A real-life story, Leigh Anne Tuohy takes in a high school boy in need of a loving and safe family. She pushes and mothers him like one of her own, eventually adopting him and helping him earn a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi.

6. Peg, Edward Scissorhands

Oh how I love Peg in Edward Scissorhands! Her heart is pure gold as she and her family open their home to strange Edward. They love him when everyone else is afraid of him, and see beyond his scissor hands.

7. Bren MacGuff, Juno

Bren is supportive and open minded throughout her step-daughter Juno’s young, unplanned pregnancy. She keeps it real while showing love and teaching life lessons. Awesome mom.

8. Myrtle, Diary Of A Mad Black Woman

Definitely not the main character of the movie, but a mother to inspire nonetheless. She whispers words of wisdom to her daughter, Helen: “When somebody hurts you, they take power over you. If you don’t forgive them, then they keeps the power. Forgive him baby, and after you forgive him, forgive yourself.”

9. Vianne, Chocolat

One of my favorite movies, ever. Vianne is a mother both dreamy and far from perfect. But still, her delight for her daughter’s imagination and her desire to help everyone live their best lives (and cause change) in a town that won’t accept who she is…magnificent.

10. M’Lynn, Steel Magnolias

Oh now this mom is fierce. M’Lynn is mama cat to her ill daughter Shelby. She even gives her a kidney, but I’m sure most of us would do the same for our own child.

11. Sarah Connor, The Terminator

Warrior mother Sarah Connor fights to protect her son before he is even born. And after that? Watch out. Nothing will stop her from keeping him safe from an evil cyborg and anything else that gets in the way.

12. Helen Parr, The Incredibles

This superhero mom can stretch and change shape to most anything and almost all of her special powers suit her for protecting her brood, saving the day, and keeping the entire Incredible family together.

13. Aibleen Clark, The Help

The next three are honorable mentions- not technically a mom like the others in the list, but totally mothers in the best way, and better than any other mother character in their story. Um, let me just say that after seeing The Help this past weekend, I could not WAIT to get home to my daughter and love on her and make sure she knows how special she is, just like Aibileen did for her charge little Mae Mobley. She was one of a kind and really should teach mama lessons to every mother in the South (and North) (and East and West!)

14. Miss Honey, Matilda

As Matilda’s teacher, Miss Honey is the only person who understands and is kind to the poor mistreated child. THANKFULLY! she does end up getting to be Matilda’s mom in the end. Happy happy ending

15. Maria, The Sound Of Music

Seven musical children in need of a mother get Maria as their governess and they end up creating the perfect family, with a whole lot of singing and even more love.
