Busy Parent Briefing: New York City Mayor Bloomberg to Give $250,000 to Planned ParenthoodMeredith Carroll
In the wake of the controversy swirling around the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation and their decision not to renew most of their grants to the Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screening, billionaire New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is stepping up to the plate.
According to The New York Times, Bloomberg announced he would give Planned Parenthood a $250,000 matching gift, or $1 for every new dollar the organization raises up to $250,000.
“Politics have no place in health care,” he said.
Komen announced this week it would cease giving the roughly $700,000 to Planned Parenthood that it had granted previously.
The president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America issued a statement in response to Bloomberg’s gift:
“On behalf of hundreds of thousands of women nationwide who rely on Planned Parenthood for breast cancer education and screening, we are enormously grateful to Mayor Bloomberg. This contribution will help ensure that politics don’t interfere with women having access to health care. People all across the country have stepped forward in the last 48 hours to offer help and support, and the mayor’s donation will help ensure that no woman is denied breast cancer services because of right-wing political pressure campaigns.”
It has been reported that Komen made the decision to stop the grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screening after receiving pressure from anti-abortion groups to shun the organization since abortion is among the services they provide.
