Recall Alert: Child's Death Prompts Major Crib Callback

dorel-cribThe death of a baby in Iowa has prompted the recall of more than half a million Dorel cribs this week.

The six-month-old child from Cedar Rapids was sleeping in a crib that the parents had tried to repair themselves after the drop-side hardware broke.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is facilitating the recall, there have been thirty-one reported drop side incidents, six of which entrapped children. Most children only suffered bruising, but the baby who died was actually strangled in the crib. The cribs are also subject to slat breakage – with thirty-six incidents reported in recent months.

This isn’t Dorel’s first recall. Late last month a quarter of a million play yards with bassinets made by the Barbados company were called back due to a suffocation risk.

Cribs are becoming a major recall item – one million play cribs from Kolcraft were recalled last summer, followed by two million StorkCraft cribs in November, then a reissued Simplicity crib recall last month. At this rate, where will babies sleep?
