Thomas Kinkade's Odd Disney Mash-Ups

Kinkade's Take on The Little Mermaid

Thomas Kinkade
– who died of what is being called “natural causes” at the age of 54 – knew a couple of things. He knew how to draw light, and he knew how to make money. The man was able to take his talent for painting landscapes with rays of sunlight into a $100 million dollar a year business. One of the things he did was partner with another company that is ridiculously good a making bag fulls of bucks – Disney.

Now, first I should confess something…I had no idea that Thomas Kinkade painted anything else besides cottages bathed in an afternoon golden glow. But apparently he is also known for his extensive Disney collection where his standard issue landscapes are populated with characters from classic Disney films like Bambi, Peter Pan and Beauty and the Beast. It’s an odd pairing, his pastoral soft hued locales with the bright colors of Disney’s stars thrust into the scene. But when you throw a beloved Disney image on anything, odds are it will sell. It’s a marriage made in commercial heaven.

But the weirdest Disney/ Kinkade story has nothing to do with his painting. It’s been reported that years ago, while at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, Kinkade got very drunk. He allegedly “mentioned his proclivity for ritual territory marking through urination” and supposedly began to urinate on a statue of Winnie the Pooh. There was apparently a very dark side to the ‘Master of Light.’
