Update: 12-Year-Old Dutch Girl Who Gave Birth to Be Put in Foster Care, Was Probably Abused by FatherCarolyn Castiglia
Well, I guess now the questions I asked yesterday about the 12-year-old girl from Groningen in the Netherlands who gave birth on a class trip have been answered. Dutch News reports that the girl is going to be placed with a foster family while Dutch police launch a formal investigation into her home life. The infant, born March 22, has already been placed in the care of a social worker.
According to Fox News, “Family members said that the schoolgirl’s father previously sexually abused another older daughter and served two years in jail for the sex crime.”
As if that’s not shocking enough – and really, which part of that one sentence is the most appalling? The part about him sexually abusing another of his daughters or the part about him ONLY SERVING TWO YEARS IN JAIL FOR RAPING HIS OWN CHILD?
Here’s where this tale takes a turn for the worst: the only reason this 12-year-old girl was living with a sex offender is because he “won custody following a divorce from their mother, who was originally from Suriname, a former Dutch colony in South America.” Was racism at play in the court’s decision? Is this mother competent? How bad could she have been, if we’re working with the logic that a SEX OFFENDER, a man who had already BEEN IN JAIL FOR RAPING HIS CHILD seemed to be the better choice? What is going on in the Dutch judicial and social systems?
And then there’s this quote, from the girl’s 30-year-old stepsister, which kills me. She told the Dutch paper De Telegraaf, “I warned him. I am shocked about what happened.”
You warned him??? Oh my God.
From Fox News:
Dutch police said in a statement Wednesday, “The girl got pregnant when she was 11, which in itself means there has been a criminal offense. Article 244 of the Penal Code, sex with a minor under 12, is punishable. In addition, there are now [circumstances] reported by the Child Protection Board. Taking these two circumstances, the police is now investigating who the father [of this baby] is.”
The Dutch have an almost onomatopoeic word to describe something that’s horrible: verschrikkelijk. It sounds like it is. Sickening.
