I think it is safe to say that we have all been in a bad relationship at some point in our lives. Weather it’s a romantic relationship, friendship, living situation, or working relationship, there are just some people we encounter at different times in our lives that bring out the crazy (or the absolute worst) in us. And recently, I’ve come to realize that raising my red-headed little monster isn’t all that different.
Now, I’m not making light of bad relationships by any stretch. Believe me, I’ve been in them myself and I know how toxic they can be. I’m also NOT saying that I don’t completely love and adore my little girl. But as a mom of an ultra-feisty toddler, I’m just saying it can be a struggle.
And here’s why.
1. You fight constantly.
About everything. Literally everything. I can’t stress this enough. You’ll fight about food, clothes, shoes, cups, weather, toys, TV … everything you can think of. Toddlers can go from zero to crazy in two seconds.
2. It’s always about them.
What they want and when they want it. And you better give it to them … OR ELSE.
3. You find yourself apologizing for things over and over … and over.
“I’m sorry I picked the wrong cup again … I’m sorry I made a crappy dinner again … I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!”
4. They leave their stuff everywhere.
And NEVER clean it up. It doesn’t matter how many times you ask them to put it away. Just like the bad roommate you had in college. Their crap is everywhere.
5. It’s always your fault.
They fall over? Mom’s fault. They break a toy? Mom’s fault. There is really nothing you can do that is right.
6. They turn you into a liar.
“Yes, we will do that tomorrow.”
“Yes, we are almost there.”
You say it even though you know it’s not true. You get the point. Sometimes I can’t even keep track of all the lies I am telling.
7. They destroy your self-confidence.
Toddlers are brutally honest. Any flaw will be pointed out and discussed with strangers; probably at really awkward times.
8. You turn to alcohol to cope.
A big glass of wine really does ease the pain and make everything a little bit better.

Just like any bad relationship, you try to make it work. The love is there. And thank goodness toddlers eventually grow up and out of these behaviors.
All we can do is hope. And pray that the teenage years aren’t any worse.More On
