When a woman goes into labor, she’s kind of busy. Usually the last thing on her mind is documenting the event herself. Surely a bystander can handle that much at least, right? Whether it’s a hired birth photographer or the grandma-to-be or her partner, pretty much anyone in the room who’s not a medical professional is free to point and click.

But for Lisa Robinson-Ward, a professional photographer who specializes in weddings and portraits, just anyone was not good enough. No, when Robinson-Ward prepared for her daughter’s birth, she knew she wanted to be the one to capture the experience — if she was able to.

“I didn’t know if I’d be able to take photos or not,” Robinson-Ward told The Huffington Post. “I had my mind set on doing it, but I wasn’t sure I’d actually be able to pull it off.”

Needless to say, she was able to pull it off — and then some. The images she captured on that day provide a beautiful look inside her daughter’s birth from a perspective we almost never see: mom’s.

Her journey starts in the early hours of the morning (her water broke at 3 AM) as she makes her way to her hospital room.

From there, she waits through the contractions …

… with the help of her supportive family.

And not to mention her husband.

After 14 hours and an epidural, it was finally time to meet Anora.

But before Anora could meet mom, she had some business to attend to.

And of course a quick little clean-up. (Look at that gorgeous hair!)

Is there anything more beautiful than locking eyes with your baby for the first time?

Well, maybe watching your partner meet your baby for the first time.

And while Robinson-Ward’s photos are absolutely breathtaking, some credit does need to go to her mother for this gorgeous post-birth shot.

Perhaps the most touching part of this family’s story is that baby Anora was a total surprise for the couple — but in the best of ways. Robinson-Ward and her husband have a 9-year-old son and had experienced two miscarriages in the following years. Eventually they stopped trying, and that’s when Robinson-Ward became pregnant with their rainbow baby, Anora, who is now six months old.

Robinson-Ward says that Anora is “really easy going,” “happy,” and “mellow” — the best kind of baby!
