Who would have thought taking her son shopping for new shoes would lead to such an important lesson in parenting? Mari Estelle Leavell let Zaine choose his own shoes. While she assumed he would go the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles route, he went straight for the blue, sparkly boots featuring none other than Anna and Elsa from Frozen.
Leavell, who shared the story with Frank Somerville of KTVU, panicked while her son was “dancing around in these boots & singing ‘Let it Go’ in Walmart.” She was concerned that he would be teased. While lost in her thoughts (and failed attempts to get Zaine to switch to a pair of Batman shoes), she encountered an old man and braced for the worst.
After revealing her concerns to the man, he said, “Let me tell you something … what matters more: what people think or being happy in life?” How profound for the shoe department at Walmart! With this, Leavell came to a major parenting realization. She explained,
“What kind of parent would I be if I said happiness can only be coloring in the lines? What kind of parent would I be if I didn’t encourage innocent child interests and imagination? What kind of parent would I be to lie to him & shelter him from the reality that people are going to talk about you, be rude, and tease you?”
We couldn’t agree more! We’re happy to hear that little Zaine is dancing around in his Frozen boots “shooting his toy gun in the air while singing ‘Let it Go.'” Elsa would certainly be proud.More On
