Social media is a breeding ground for fat-shaming, with thousands of ignorant trolls lashing out every day at total strangers because they have nothing better to do than to bully people based on their weight, but who knew there are people out there desperate and deranged enough to take on a baby?
Landon “Stuff Curry” Benton from Quincy, Illinois is a totally adorable 10-month-old boy who has risen to Instagram fame for his uncanny resemblance to Golden State Warriors two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry. Back in February, photos of the boy went viral after someone dubbed him “Stuff Curry.” His mother, Jessica, was confused as she had never even heard of the basketball star, and she was also shocked: were people actually fat-shaming her baby?
She could have ignored the nastiness, but having recently lost her 20-year-old son to suicide while pregnant with Landon, she was inspired to turn the situation around into something positive.
“I can’t say it’s directly due to bullying or anything, but I have one kid who’s not here with me who told me that people made fun of him,” she explained to ESPN’s Darren Rovell about her late son’s death. “I’m not going to have another kid think that the whole world was laughing at him.”
Jessica started an Instagram account for her new celebrity tot, @babylandonlee, which she populates with crushingly cute snaps of him, and it currently has 37.6k followers.
“I wanted to really turn it into something good and take control of it and say, ‘OK, we’re gonna own this name. Yeah, we’re Stuff Curry. We look like the famous basketball player.’”
As someone who spent a good part of adolescence struggling with body image issues BSM (before social media), I cannot imagine coming of age now. Teens have it so rough, as they cannot even share a photo on social media without enduring spiteful and cutting comments about how they look. But it really, really saddens me that there are living, breathing idiots who have nasty things to say about a baby!
Seriously, as if the poor kid doesn’t have enough to think about (Where is mommy, where is mommy, where is mommy?), now he has to worry about how his body looks in his swim diaper? I kid, I kid, but that’s really how absurd bullying a baby is.
Clearly Landon, with all his Insta-fame, is getting the last laugh on this one, and cheering on his basketball star doppelgänger while he’s at it!
