Recently over winter break, we found ourselves with a lot of extra time on our hands. All of the big kids’ sports had come to a close, and our days were no longer filled with running around from soccer games, to baseball games, and back to swim meets, all the while dragging our happy-go-lucky toddler, Hayden, along with us. Finally, we had a mellow few days to hang out at home, and maybe let the youngest member of our family have a say in how our days played out.
Naturally, much of our day focused on rambunctious wrestling, playing road car rally, and, of course, LEGO® DUPLO® bricks. The idea of taking our standard LEGO DUPLO play to the next level by creating these imaginative story scenes was the brain child of our older kids and husband, with me and Hayden just along for the ride. Of course when Hayden got wind of how he’d get to be the star of each story, he was fully on board, and so our day of scene creation began. LEGO DUPLO building was left to the kids, with some help from dad, and I was in charge of set design. Since playing dress-up is pretty much Hayden’s favorite thing right now, he naturally selected each outfit for all of the different scenes.
We made an ordinary day at home, extraordinary, thanks to our stock of LEGO DUPLO bricks and a lot of imagination. I think our long and slow winter break will be one the kids remember forever.
Here’s seven times we took playtime to the next level with LEGO DUPLO bricks …
When our youngest got to explore the sea on dry land.
When my 3-year-old rock climber scaled a 50-foot cliff from the comfort and safety of his own room.
When story time was truly out-of-this-world fantastic.
When lions and elephants invaded our living room.
When my toddler caught the big one right in his own backyard.
When my kiddo scaled a skyscraper in a single bound, right before nap time.
When my little boy was the main attraction at the circus.
