Moms are often the ones behind the camera — making sure every milestone, big or small, is recorded and celebrated. But at the end of the day, they’re so busy capturing these moments that they’re rarely ever in them.
And one mom who understands that struggle more than most is New York-based photographer and mom of two, Ahna Tessler.
Ahna specializes in documentary-style photography of families, capturing not just picture-perfect “smile for the camera” portraits, but the everyday real memories shared within a home. From time spent around the kitchen table to the car rides to soccer practice — those are the moments that shape a childhood.
But even as she had captured hundreds of photos of other moms and their children, she realized she didn’t have many of her own. Sure, there were plenty of photos of her kids and lots that she had taken of them with her husband, but photos with her in the frame? Well, those were harder to find.
As she got to thinking about it, she realized she was not alone in this. Few can afford the services of a professional photographer. And for single moms with no partner to hand the camera to, quality photos with their children are rare or non-existent.
Which is precisely why Ahna and Babble teamed up to create a photo series in their honor — just in time for Mother’s Day.
Motherhood in Focus honors hardworking, single moms everywhere by capturing the beauty, love, and sacrifice they make for their children every day.
We had the privilege of being invited into the homes of 23 amazing moms in the New York City area to capture their memories and hear their stories. And on Saturday, April 30th, Babble hosted a party in their honor to unveil the series and gift each mother with a full album of their photos.
Because we believe that every mother deserves to have the moments — big and small — to look back on forever.
