You learn a lot about yourself after going through labor. I repeat: a LOT. For example, I learned that I have an extremely low tolerance for being “shushed”, even by my well-meaning mother-in-law who probably didn’t know what else to say while I was moaning out in pain.
Some women are delightfully funny and even super chill during labor. I mean, remember the wonderfully charming Yuki Nishizaw, who danced the “Tootsee Roll” during her labor?
Others, though, are straight-up BADASS, like Nayzia Thomas, who recently wowed Twitter with a single photo so impressive that … well … you just gotta see this to believe it.
Posted on December 12, the photo shows Thomas sitting in a hospital bed surrounded by college books while intently focused on the laptop screen in front of her. That’s because this mama was legit taking a college final exam while in labor, you guys. SERIOUSLY.
“My mom took this pic [and] it’s the perfect explanation of my life,” her now-viral tweet reads. “Yes I’m about to have a baby, but final SZN ain’t over yet.”
I mean, talk about inspiring.
Thomas is a sophomore student at Johnson County Community College in Kansas City, Missouri, where she works incredibly hard to earn a degree. She wasn’t expecting to go into labor while finishing up a semester, but like every baby that I have ever met, hers was going by his own agenda. Still, that wasn’t going to mess with his mom’s determination to get that A. And as a teen mom, she’s also tried her damnedest to make sure others wouldn’t get a chance to stereotype her.
“I didn’t want [the pregnancy] to be in the way,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle. “That’s what people expect. You’re a teen mom, you’re a young mother. That’s why my mom took that picture. It shows [I] follow through.”
The new mom is certainly no stranger to hard work — during the summers, she holds down not one, not two, but three jobs.
Thomas and her boyfriend welcomed their son Anthony Johnson into the world on December 12 at 1:30 PM. And while the healthy and happy mom posted an adorable family picture to her Twitter account just a couple days later to show how well they’re all doing, she also shared some scary events after her exam was over.
“Update,” the post read. “On 12/12/17 we had a healthy baby boy. However, I experienced major blood loss [and] my body went into shock post-delivery. It was very scary, but his father was right there to take over when I went unconscious. We are blessed! AND I’m finishing the semester w/ a 3.5 GPA!”
Honestly, this woman is my new hero. She nearly died, but managed to give birth to a healthy bouncing baby boy AND a GPA to envy.
Thomas not only demonstrated her sheer mental, emotional, and physical strength on her delivery day, but also just smacked down every future excuse her child might dream up for getting out of homework. Seriously.
